Weighing just 13.2 grams and 4.1cm in length, the figure is made of finely articulated goldthreads and tiny fillagree pellets. It is smooth on the reverse side but has a small eye at the top for a chain. It was probably worn by a Viking woman. The dating of the crucifix, estimated at being from 900 – 950AD, is significant because it would indicate Danes embraced Christianity earlier than previously thought. At the moment, the Jelling Stones - two large runestones erected in 965AD in Jutland - are thought to be the oldest known representation of Jesus on a cross in Denmark.

Christian missionaries had been present in the country for around two hundred years before then, but had failed to convert the Vikings. However, pressures from Christian trade partners to convert, and in particular, influence from the Kingdom of Germany to the south, meant that most Danes were Christian by the end of the Viking period in 1050.

“This is a subject that certainly will have to appear in the history books in the future,” said Ms Beck. “In recent years there has been more and more signs that Christianity was widespread earlier than previously thought - and here the clearest evidence so far.”

Why is that a crucifix? I know it matches the shape but that could just be a coincidence

Looks like a happy dancing man to me.

Yeah, it's not exactly the most complicated shape.

Same reason that the figure on the stone is, if you click the link.

quote:I'm with you. It's a figure with its arms stretched laterally... I don't see why that has to be a crucifix. If it had stakes or something through the hands, then sure.

quote:The "rope" around the knees doesn't make any sense. It's a cord around each leg, separately, but not around both legs at one time. If you're tying someone to a crucifix, you bind up both legs at one time with the same rope. You don't loop a rope individually around each leg.
looks like it's legs are bound with a rope or something as well as it's arms
So that doesn't make sense.
I think those "ropes" are part of the figure's clothing.

It's amazing how many people don't know that AD goes before the year.

Looks like one of those artifacts you'd see on Ancient Aliens. Maybe the Vikings made contact.

Maybe they wore it because they enjoyed a good ol' crucifixion.

and that you were more likely to be put on an X shape, than a cross

It's clearly a human being depicted in a cross shape. It could be a coincidence, but would be a wild one. Based on the date, it is presumptively a Christian symbol (or perhaps jewelry/decoration derivative of, particularly, Catholic symbols), barring some evidence suggestive of the opposite conclusion.
At least, that's the way I interpret it.
