A company looking to hire me away from the same job I’ve had in sales for 15 years, is ready to make me an offer with a nice OTE, but have asked to get my last 7 years of W-2’s. I’ve never even heard of that (never interviewed for a job before) and don’t feel like giving away that information. I feel like telling them to pound sand. Im not going to give them a single one. F that nonsense, especially this far along....it’s for IT sales

I'd probably say no thanks, that just seems like a very odd place to work if they want that info

It makes sense if you're in sales that they want to see what you're bringing in in commissions.

Turn them in with the amounts blacked out.

It is for a very large IT research sales firm with the best reputation out there. I shouldn’t have to give them shite. If you don’t trust me to be the right candidate for what you are willing to offer, then F you....

Yeah.......I would never give a potential employer previous W2s.

To the extent there is an advantage to requesting a W-2, it would be to confirm employment gaps, rate of pay and the like when proof doesn't otherwise exist

looks like it might be illegal in some states to even ask

I would. What you make now is irrelevant to the services you can perform for them

They want to know how much they think they can pay you and save themselves money. Shady tactics

Ya I would just say you aren't comfortable providing your personal financial information to them.

It's not uncommon, at least not in my industry. Some states do prohibit it though.

I know it’s illegal in the financial industry to even ask

Not a chance in hell I'm doing that.

They want it to verify your income and commissions. But there are other ways to do that. Nor should they need them if they have proper compensation analyses in place.

ask if the employer is considering making an offer. If the answer isn't positive, you can say you would prefer to wait until an offer was pending.

If they are the industry leader then quite frankly they have the position of power. I'm sure they have plenty of other candidates willing to turn those documents over.

If it were for a run-of-the-mill employer you would have a much stronger case.

I am gonna guess they are attempting to confirm some claim you made as to previous pay/commissions ect...

If I am right.. while I get wanting to confirm some claim you may have made, It seems like an odd request to me...

Pretty common for commissioned positions. They want to see your verified income path. Best indicator of success for those type of positions.

If checking employment gaps, just provide them with redacted earnings.

Typical for a good sales job.

They want to verify that you are good at sales and not making shite up.

A person could claim to be the GOAT sales person making $1M a year in commissions. New company is going to want to verify that.
