My other story with this is in the 1870s, the US navy sent an expedition to the Darien in Panama.

The expedition got immediately lost and stayed lost within one mile of where their ships were for months.

Their clothing rotted away immediately. Most of their teeth rotted away from eating badly acidic nuts. Many died and most who didn’t died within the next year or two because they were all like 120 pounds

Speaking with KGO, McClish said he was “tired and a little sore” after his ordeal. “I lost my voice,” he added.

This is why having a whistle with you when you hike is essential.

Seems like he went off unprepared like an idiot

And he went off of the trail.

Never go off the trail. That's the #1 rule of hiking

ETA: Whomever downvoted this is obviously a dumbass who has ventured off the trail.

I don't understand this.

Wait for sunrise, sunset.

Know what east and west are.
(Or north or south).

Figure what direction you came from.

Head the opposite of that direction until you reach your starting point or some body of water or...something

Why wouldn't you bring a phone on a 3 hour hike?

90% of the time when hiking in the mountains I have no phone reception. Went 4 days in Colorado on a solo hike with none.

Well, the one I replied to looked to have been a screenshot from the news story. We are fricked if the media is going to use AI that way.

I'd be surprised if he didn't get giardia from all that stream water.

Rattlesnake canyon Hiking Incident 1999

quote:

This is an infamous story where some friends went for a hike (another that was just supposed to be 3 hours) and got lost immediately. They did have food and water with them but didn’t use it wisely. They also had a map they didn’t know how to read.

Long story short, one killed his friend who was panicking on the night of the third day by stabbing him through the chest with a knife.

The rangers discovered them on the morning of the 4th day.

Turns out they were only 20 minute from the parking lot. The guy who killed his friend went to prison for two years for this.

I think he'd have service somewhere where he was.

But regardless, I meant for offline map apps. They're great. I use my phone for it when I hike and I feel like I might be wandering off the intended route. I bring a backup charger too. I actually keep it on airplane mode to preserve battery while I use the maps.

As far as survival goes, large volumes of water will usually do it.
