But, the story doesn't tell you why school officials/police officers were looking to search his car.

it may have been part of a school wide parking lot search.

they did one of those my senior year in HS and cops tried to arrest me for having an empty plastic bag in my car. they claimed drug paraphernalia. the charges didnt stick but i still got suspended.

Not saying I agree with it but most schools have the right to search your locker and your vehicle if it's on school property.

This is what y'all are missing...

quote:

The knife, which Wiser said is part of his first responder's kit and can be used for slicing an accident victim's seatbelt, was found tucked inside his EMT medical vest in the trunk of the car.

They are talking about a paratrooper/EMT knife... more commonly known as a stiletto. Illegal unless you are in fact an EMT, Police, or Military. Similar to a switch blade... double sided blades.

I don't know this is the case for sure, but I would bet money...

This happened in Baton Rouge about 5 years ago at Woodlawn. A kid had a landscaping knife in his car, they searched his car, found the knife, and expelled him.

quote:

In this case, the knife was a present from his dad with the words “To Luke, always know that I love you” engraved upon it
The 17-year-old said he used the knife at his dad’s landscaping business on weekends and after school to open bags of seed and fertilizer.

He said he considers it a tool, not a weapon, and forgot he even had it when Woodlawn High’s principal asked to search his car. …

The student apparently had no previous discipline problems. Simpson’s mother said Luke had a 3.3 grade-point average at the time of his expulsion. In her written appeal, Simpson’s mother included notes from teachers commending Luke for being a well-behaved student who did his assignments.

The mom and student fought the hell out of it and lost, and I think the kid ended up at Dunham or somewhere for his senior year.

But he is an EMT trainee, so he'd likely have legal right to one if that's the case.

Although not sure if being a trainee disallows it.....

I don't know that to be fact.

But the 13 days in jail, and reference to EMT leads me down that path...

None of that warrants a car search.

Nope, the blade was bought at k-mart and is a standard pocket knife...

Jesus, I remember we used to keep shotguns/rifles in our cars because we would go hunting after school.

This was back in the early 90s.

The k mart part threw me off when I read that, but "pocket knife" and "folding blade" do describe what I am talking about.
