I don't know why people can't get this through their head, but FEMA disaster assistance is NOT income based. NOT AT ALL. You could make $500K a year and get FEMA aid. FACT.

After Katrina we got a $2500, I think, FEMA disaster grant just after the storm. To fix our place we had to take out an SBA loan. Ours was $190k, we had just bought our home and had no flood insurance...the federal government, not FEMA, came back and gave us a $150k grant to pay off what it did of the SBA loan.

Wait, are you fricking kidding me? You got an SBA loan and FEMA came back around and gave you a grant to pay your SBA loan off with?? What?

No, FEMA didn't pay him, the government allocated a ton of additional funding after the fact.

Don't bring facts to this misinformation circle jerk. I understand this is an emotionally charged topic around here, but for all of the bitching on thus board about accountability and government leeches, there sure are a ton of people who want a handout too.

yea you did... You live in S.La, you live in a flood zone, just maybe not the most flood prone zone

You are a fricking moron.

Many of the places that flooded were well over 30 feet above sea level. Has nothing to do with location and everything to do with a 1000 year rain event.

Umm...perhaps you did?

Perhaps you shouldn't comment on things you clearly know nothing about?

We were told we didn't qualify for a grant based on our income. Best thing you can do is claim your losses on this year's tax returns. Or you can file an amendment to 2015 and claim the loss to possibly get money back. That's what we just did.

ETA: I see people disagreeing with this, and maybe it's not true but I asked the lady on the phone why we were automatically getting transferred to SBA, and she actually said based on income. Maybe she was wrong or lying, I have no idea.

It might depend on who you speak to at FEMA. Seems when there is a big event, such as this flood, the government might bring on contracted employees and not all of them are on the same page. I would definitely ask more than once, maybe five times to see if you get a different answer.

So I just spent an hour on the phone with FEMA. Basically, if you have a high credit score, you will qualify for an SBA Loan, which means you are inelegible to receive a grant from FEMA.

The only way to receive a FEMA grant is not to qualify for a loan.

Wow. That is INSANE. And one of the biggest things about FEMA loans is that they're very quick and easy to get. A loan from a bank can take weeks, especially if you lost your printer and computer and don't have easy access to your W2's, pay stubs, renters contracts, mortgage statements, insurance statements, etc. etc.

frick this Obama administration, seriously.

I don't know how you got that out of what I wrote. I received $150k grant to pay off the $190k SBA loan I took out, but it was long after FEMA left the scene. Really though, they bailed out Countrywide. With the $40k remaining and the $180k loan I had to purchase the house two years prior, for $200k, I was upside down in the home.

It was all so fricking wonderful contemplating bankruptcy for months on end though, let me tell you. Living in a FEMA camper in the front yard with a wife who had become pregnant while we were refugees, all to slave most evenings (after commuting to NOLA on a fricked up bridge to work at Lockheed) in a fricked up house in a destroyed town, with bankruptcy looming. All just peachy, I wish I could describe it better.

Probably because she didn't want to deal with you anymore. Just a guess.
