Not sure why the other thread got anchored.

Anyone have any experience with red wheat rice? The doctor suggested coupling this with exercise, and a heart-healthy diet for 3 months until i get on something. I have read some weird reviews on the stuff, and haven't found a lot of positive reviews.

Should i go ahead and get on the medication he suggested if i didn't go that route? I think he recommended crestor.

I'm not as fit as i used to be, but i am 6' 190. I don't really consider myself overweight. After researching some stuff, it does seem like my LDL numbers are pretty high. Everywhere i have read says "very high risk" of heart disease. Just makes me feel about nervous about waiting to get on a pill. I guess bad cholesterol for a few years won't kill you? i'm assuming its bad cholesterol for many years is what kills you.

Also, someone had mentioned my insulin levels. He said I wasn't in risk for diabetes?

Red yeast rice has a similar functionality as the statin class of medications.

It could help, but they're "dirtier" than modern statins and have a higher risk of adverse effects.

Try it and see if you can tolerate it. If your doc decides to put you on a statin, don't take the rice with it.

Also, Crestor is one of the stronger statins but is expensive if you dont have good insurance. May want to try Atorvastatin 40-80mg if money is an issue.

Would you try natural with exercise first before getting on anything? Wasn't sure if my cholesterol being that high was an immediate issue or not. Doctor wasn't that great at explaining everything.

Some people have cholesterol problems irrespective of diet and exercise, and it's difficult for me to make a good recommendation without knowing your history and actual numbers.

I will tell you that absent pregnancy or other contraindications, statins are very good medications for reducing cardiovascular risk.

One of my professors jokingly said "statins and ace inhibitors should be in the water" (tongue in cheek, of course)

If your doc says you'd benefit, I wouldn't hesitate to take his advice. But you should also couple it with exercise as possible... every bit helps and exercise when done properly will do more for you overall than any single pill.

There's literally no proof of that.

Forgot to mention, statins do more than just affect cholesterol. Some data has shown they can reduce certain kinds of inflammation which may play a significant role in long term risk reduction.

What exactly did he say was a heart healthy diet. It seems like we have this thread here once a month and it's always the same thing.

Just got told the same thing by my doc...haven't started the red rice yeast yet.

My numbers are
LDL - 133
HDL - 74
Trig - 130

Total - 233

My Total/HDL ratio is at 3.15 which is in the optimum range. I hesitate to take meds at that level, though the LDL is on the high side.

ETA: I exercise 5 to 6 days / week. Two days of weights and 3 to 4 days of walking 2.5 to 3 miles.

Statins have also been found to have adverse effects on muscles, including muscle strains/tears and pains.

First: Dietary chol does not impact blood chol. This myth needs to die.

Second: Typical total chol tests are worthless, and widely regarded as outdated, but change is slow.

Third: If you want a REAL test, then you need an LDL-P test, which is a true measure.

Long story short, you can have a great report on your typical chol test and be near a heart attack, you can have a horrible test and be just fine. LDP-P is what really matters.

If I were you, I wouldn't do anything until I had an LDL-P test. You can buy one yourself from Wellnessfx if your doctor says no.

That may be, but you probably are too. You need to read The Diet Heart Myth by Chris Kresser. Educate yourself and stop being blindly led by ignorant doctors that are working on faulty science. Read about the lipid hypothesis while youre at it.

Kresser is the best resource out there for people wanting to know the real deal on heart health.

His interviews (like with Robb Wolf) on cholesterol and LDL-P (using cars on a road or boats on a river as an analogy) are practically required listening.

I know someone that had the typical blood cholesterol test and was prescribed a statin. Changed docs and was off the statins for MONTHS because they moved and just lapsed getting the Rx... and the test was fine.

Also, I heard if a woman is on HRTs her cholesterol results will be very inaccurate.

Fish oil was great for helping my cholesterol. I ended up on Lovaza which is prescription strength fish oil. No fishy burps. It brought up good cholesterol and also made my triglycerides plummet.
