A hungry coyote will eat anything.
The last pup I had was a chihuahua. We'd take him out early in the morning around day light most days. Well, he was sniffing around doing what dogs do. He was maybe about 8-10ft or so from me. It was a little foggy that morning, but I had my flashlight and the dog never went far.
Well, I heard something make a sound, and I caught a glimpse of the coyote as it was ducking its head to grab my dog. He got my dog, but the good boy let out the most viscous growl I heard out of him, turned, and started snapping at the coyote. I jumped and yelled and stomped my feet. The only thing I had in my hand was the flashlight, so, I threw it at the coyote which had trotted past me with the dog in its mouth.
Between the dog's fight and my feeble efforts, the coyote dropped the dog, and ran off.
Ultimately, our dog survived with no issues. He just died late last year at just shy of 18 years old. If the coyote bad been hungry, it would have been a different story, I'm sure.

Man, all you have to do to get rid of coyotes is to soak a sponge in bacon grease and cut up in pieces and put them around the outside of your property. The smell keeps them away.

At night, we hear the coyotes along the river. there was a drop in their populations for a while. Locals thought that heart worm might have moved from kept canines to the coyote packs.
With out buildings where the working felines can hide, we haven't lost cats to them. Without them, the mouse and rabbit populations aren't controlled by hawks and foxes.
The coyotes do take down ailing dogs.
I do not like wasteful predators, and coyotes tend to go for the guts of their prey and leave the rest uneaten until it's found by the buzzards.

Indoor/outdoor cats are the most wasteful predators. I welcome the coyotes in my neighborhood. The outdoor cats in my neighborhood have destroyed the population of the birds, lizards, skinks, and snakes, just to leave their chewed corpses in my landscape.

However that natural ecological balance goes awry when a huge quantity of additional, non-native, invasive and efficient killing machines in the form of filthy arse feral and domesticated housecats are putting an additional, unplanned load on it, and so when Connie The Cat Lady's precious housecats destroy the local food chain the cats become the hunted, inasmuch as they can be hunted. Sadly, no native predator can make a sizeable dent in the population of roaming housecats and feral cats, and the folks in the Australian Outback can attest to that.
Second only to man (because it is a man-made problem) domesticated felines, both feral and pet housecats, are arguably the most destructive invasive animal species in this country and perhaps the world. If you're a cat owner and you let your housecat outside to "play", then remember that you're an arse hole and that every single native species around your home - from bluejays and bobwhite quail to salamanders and monarch butterflies - hopes that your filthy cat dies a grizzly death as soon as possible (doubly so if the cat isn't spayed and neutered):

Every single feral cat that is alive should be shot dead on the spot, and I couldn't care less if someone's precious little filthy kitty who they let outside every day is eaten alive by a native species who had to go hungry for a day, let alone be starved to death, because "Precious" and those like her destroyed the biodiversity where she lives, roams, shits and destroys all the native prey.

Cat owners who let their cats roam and stalk and kill every single native species that they can - because that's what every single one of them do - are in the upper echelon of being the trashiest, most useless people who ever lived. The topic of feral cats and outdoor domesticated cats are one of the few times where you'll hear me say that there should be stringent laws put in place: Laws to discourage cat owners from destroying native species, with dire repercussions if they're caught breaking those laws and destroying native wildlife all because their filthy feline can hunt and piss on everything and be happy.
