I always assumed the scouts were for kids whose dad doesn’t hunt/fish/camp/drink beer etc. My dad taught me all those things the same way I taught my son. We didn’t need some dad dressed up in a funny little suit to teach us.

If you do all these things, I don’t see the need to join. Plus it sounds like they already have a full schedule with the other things you listed.

All three of my kids were in Cub Scouts. (2 girls included, so bring on the hate)

It was one meeting a month and a few family campouts per year. I met some great people in Cub Scouts who I'm friends with still today. Same gos for the kids.

The Cub scouts are usually a group from the same school and neighborhood, so you usually know the den leaders, etc. personally.

They're big into background checks and keeping the pedo thing out. Everyone who was around the kids group was required to get the background check.

All three of mine lost interest when it was time to move over to the full scouting.

Son was in the scouts for one year. Our leader was a goof and there was no communication or leadership what so ever. My son was bored 90% of the time except for the 1 cool camping trip we took.

All four of my boys are in scouts - have been since tiger cubs. The oldest boy has his Eagle Board of Review tomorrow

Cub Scouts is tedious, but once they get to Boy Scouts it’s great - I’ve only gone camping once with the boys and that’s bc I was taking the youngest boy to complete an activity with a troop before crossing over

Summer camp alone is worth it. My older boys also did Sea Base.

ETA: maybe cub scouts was tedious bc my husband was the cub master and I was asst cub master

I always felt like the Cub Scouts were a bunch of nerds. Of course, no offense intended.

I gave up on the scouts as a kid but I do have a very fine Henry golden boy 22LR Boy Scout edition. I don’t feel worthy to own it .

MF this. Dads that work at machine shops were the ones to beat.

I can’t stand the stereotype. Your kid won’t grow up to be a man if you’re too afraid to let him out of your sight for 5 minutes. All the leaders have sons in the troop. It’s not like they let any creeper off the street become a leader. Allow your kids to find out who they are and what they’re capable of. They’ll never be able to learn to live independently if mom and dad are always looking over their shoulder. Every adolescent male craves independence. Scouts gives them a sense of that.

I was Eagle, oldest son was Eagle, youngest, Eagle. I was a Scoutmaster.

We did the Philmont Scout ranch trek together. If there is any way on earth you can swing it, go to Philmont with your son. Our team hiked 64 miles in 5 days (full packs), hiked to the top and camped on top of Old Baldy one night.

I was younger then.

Both sons served as waterfront camp staff for three years at BSA summer camp. Both have mile swim metals.

Tons of memories.

I also know how to make 12 Dutch Oven pots of yellow cake mix Peach Cobbler at one time using campfire coals. And the fear of running out with 8-10 scouts still in line to get their cobbler.

My sons only did it for a short while, but long enough that both won trophies for top 3 finish at the pinewood derby (took me one year to realize others were not just letting their kids make the car). It’s worth checking out and wasn’t that time consuming.

Not going to lie, when I was growing up, the guys in the scouts were considered to be dweebs.

20 out of 24 men who walked on the moon were Eagle Scouts, so maybe there’s something to it.

I quit when I was a Star. Was too much to juggle between band and baseball. But if I could go back, I would get my Eagle. I learned a lot of good life skills and made some of the best friends. You’re generally not going to have a bunch of punk kids in Scouts so you don’t have to worry too much about your kid making friends there

I was out on scouts once they started letting parents go on trips. Yes, you learn skills, but when your mom’s there, you can’t go to Troop leaders tent at night to get your Inclusiveness badge so what’s the point?
All Troop's are different, so find out if the Troop allows parents to go with them. Ours had one campout a year as a family campout where parents could go, otherwise they were not allowed unless they had an adult leadership role.

Plus, it ceases to be cool at 7th grade. Ain’t no dude selling popcorn and wearing his uniform to school gettin any chicks either.
It's not cool to non-Scouting peers, but there are some terrific opportunities that aren't available elsewhere via High Adventure.

That’s a lot of shite. I’ve never believed in playing all of those sports…are they good at any of them? Focus on one, two at most and get good. Playing at the highest level possible when they’re 13 should be the goal…playing 4 sports poorly isn’t helping anyone.

IDK about the Scouts.

This guy would have had a heart attack going on some of the trips we had when my son first joined cub scouts. We drank well. Ate well too. One campout we had a guy bring up a turkey frying set up and another dad made gumbo. We also set up a huge arse projector screen to watch LSU football

This is the key. It’s only as good as the other kids in the pack and the other dads you’re going to be forced to hang out with.

Sign them up. Kick arse in the derby every year. That’s all.
