The issue with heroin right now is that I don't think people truly realize how easy it is to get addicted to prescription opioids, especially if you have some ongoing health issues that have required surgery (since that's usually where it starts) and how easy it is to make the jump from prescription to heroin.
It's no coincidence that you've probably seen a sharp jump in heroin addicts in states where they've pushed for harder prescription restrictions. I'm not saying they shouldn't, but unfortunately that's the underbelly of those laws.

The Carfentanil should help people unwind in a way that plain old boring heroin just can't do.

That stuff hit the streets yesterday too.

yeah there were a lot of new opioid addicts b/c of the pain pill boom of the 00s
then the Rx drugs were restricted, prices rose, and it coincided with Afghanistan and Mexico starting to produce huge amounts of heroin. it's cheaper and more available then teh Rx opioids and heroin is coming back strong
it's a really bad system that developed and we're not dealing with it that well

OC and other painkillers were everywhere when i was at LSU 08-12. I knew a few people that got pretty bad off, lucky to avoid any OD's or major junky theft with anyone I was close with. All the people i care about are fine now, I knew others that fell in knee deep.
I am not surprised at all that you are seeing a rise in Heroin use, once that Florida pill mill connection closed.

It really was absurd how easily they were to get, my friends and I were buying hundreds at a time in that period. It's been years since I've even heard of anyone holding pain killers. Of course, a big part of that is getting older, I'm sure there are still some to be found in the college aged crowd.

Who knew they sedated Elephants with a huge dose of a super-strong opiate/opiod.
Being some folks taking eternal naps I fear.
eta:The restrictions on Pain Management Doctors has got a lot of people that were probably using some form of OxyContin, now probably are using whatever they can find.Probably Fentanyl or Heroin.
I'm 55 and in Pain Management.Had a Total Knee Replacement November 9th.My Doctor prescribes me Norco(HydroCodone).
The DEA has affected the way Doctors treat their Patients. That's F'd up.

The tighter restrictions on opiods will help in the long run for this new generation to prevent more people who previously had no addictions to becoming addicted, but in the short term it leaves those already addicted to them to turn to heroin.
We need a transition plan for those addicted to opiods instead of drying up the well.
It sounds crazy, but we need to allow them to take opiate pills under supervision and ween them off, also under supervision.
I have seen several friends/acquaintances die from OD'ing and had even more friends that were basically junkies in college and stole from everyone. Most of them are cleaned up now, but there are some who either perished or will never be "normal".
fricking sucks.

How should we deal with it different than what we're doing?
