They were around but I don't remember hearing much about these animals in the 90s or before. They're out of control now.

I think the mother should offer this young man whatever he wants. Perhaps treat him to a really nice dinner.
That was incredibly brave to spring into action and risk his own body. If I was brave enough to go towards this animal acting like that, I'd probably try to find some sort of weapon first. And maybe some full on body armor, a helmet, etc. So even more awesome he didn't hesitate as every second if valuable here.
