Here’s Why Picking Your Nose Is a Bad Idea

Picking your nose isn’t such a harmless habit after all. In the short Tech Insider video below, otolaryngologist Erich P. Voigt outlines exactly what's happening when you stick your finger in your nose, and explains how nose picking can cause everything from nosebleeds to irritation and even illness.
Nose picking, Voigt explains, causes abrasions and tiny amounts of bleeding within the nose. That in itself isn’t such a big deal—but it turns out the germs in your nose love feasting on blood. Picking your nose not only transfers whatever germs were hanging out on your hand to your nasal passage, but simultaneously provides them with a tasty lunch.

Napper said he asked his students, adding he's seen this behavior in his two daughters, who may be just "fulfilling what we're truly meant to do." Mucus is secreted by tissues that line the mouth, nose, sinuses, throat, lungs and gastrointestinal tracts, according to WebMD. It acts similar to flypaper, trapping bacteria, dust and other unwanted substances before they can enter the body. When mucus and its trappings dry out, a "booger" comes to be.

But it also provides a snack so I'll stick with it.

The only time it is a bad idea is when you think you're gonna get a nice chunk, flick it away outside while walking to your vehicle, and be able to breathe better but you get the big glob of snot with nothing to wipe it on.
