re: Here's a life lesson: Don't enroll into an online masters program at USC for $200K

Seems like everyone wants to blame everyone else for their poor decisions. Especially when they get into student loan debt. It’s always “poor me, I got taken advantage of by …” it’s always, the bank, the university, etc. But you’re the one buying their sales pitch. You chose the school and the course of study. That’s on you. Or her, in this case.
This is definitely on her, but the only reason they can sell the bs degree for 200-300k is because people can get a loan for that much for it. Why? Whatever degree she has, isn't and will never be worth that much. Just because people are stupid enough to over pay for something, doesn't mean they should have the chance to. Why should there not be limitations on loan amounts for a given degree that changes annually based on job outlook? Why would anyone be against that outside of over bloated university staff/pay? You'd rather continue to let stupid people make poor decisions? Society doesn't benefit from having a bunch of degreed coffee shop workers or even degree required workers paying a fortune for a bs piece of paper. In addition to chaulking this up as people are stupid, why not actually solve the problem? Luckily, our government knows the best solution is to try and throw money at it and to not actually do anything to fix the problem.

Are you suggesting no one seek higher learning unless they have cash on hand to pay for it?
If this happened in real life tuition prices would drop by 75% overnight.
The only reason tuition is that high is because someone created a loan program to pay for it.

I don’t feel bad for her.
What exactly was she thinking she was gonna do making 48k and go that far into debt?

The program I'm gonna take at USM is 22k, and that's with out of State tuition.

There should be a market correction but that game is rigged

Absolutely, the schools are a big problem here. It does not cost them anywhere near that price to deliver online lectures.

I hold a BS/MS/JD but thought about an online MBA to check the box and (hopefully) enhance my management chops.
I looked at Houston (then $60k) and Rice (then $100k) and just couldn't justify the investment.
I was already a managing partner then and time was really tight, so I wound up not pursuing the MBA, but I will say the LSU option (just $12k at the time) was the best priced option from a major school system.
A word of caution, however: once you ping their system and they deem you eligible, they will pursue you like a carpet salesman in Istanbul until you decide.

I learned this by looking into a Harvard data analytics certificate program and it really made me question the value after they kept trying to hump my leg. If your program is that valuable, then people like me should be on a long waiting list.
*ETA: the problem is that some people just can't analyze problems from that level AND there may be a bit of instant gratification mixed in. I fear the social media age of destroyed focus and attention span is also destroying any ability for understanding delayed gratification.

People sell all kinds of useless stuff. Caveat Emptor.

This, these universities have become so goddamn bloated with the admin fees and useless degrees as well
The way to fix this is to cut off the endless free money, and not to go after the fees and bloat to drive costs down.

It was in my late Grandfather’s rotation, and I’d forgotten it.
Thanks, Counselor.

A lot of that is outside lead gen firms. They get a bounty for a qualified lead and another if they deliver you as a student.
It’s really bad for small private schools that are struggling with enrollment. Some basically outsource their entire online program marketing and curriculum design as random online students from 1,000 miles away keep the school afloat

she must have taken out a bunch to live on while she completed the degree. that degree is about 70k, which is still ridiculous. degrees like social work are there because of suckers being able to take out loans to cover the cost. they have some great online degrees in their engineering school, but i doubt suzie was a candidate for those progams.

Jesus Christ.
You can get an online MBA from LSU-S for like $10k…
These people are such idiots

The chasm between USC and LSU makes them basically different degrees

Why do you hate capitalism? Nobody is forcing her to enroll.

Sound more like an issue with her than the degree.
