It isn't too out there. I would make some tweaks and be fine. Reduce the 401k until the kids are in school. They are in CA. Vacation would be camping in the local national parks. Get clothes on trading pages. No charity. Reduce child lessons. At that point, I would explore one parent working part time to reduce daycare, and not sub out the raising of my child.

perhaps they should move farther out of the city?
At what cost? Increased fuel and car maintenance costs. Then you have to factor in time lost commuting. Not to mention that many suburbs in these types of areas really aren’t all that cheaper. You just get a little more bang for your buck.

not to mention you can write off childcare
It's a credit and it's maxed at $600 per child at that income

$1,000 a month on food for a family of three? They must be fat as frick.

The childcare, mortgage, vacations, clothes, and children’s lessons are pretty absurd.
3k a month mortgage, two $4,000 vacations, $2,000/month on childcare, $417/month on “children’s lessons”??, and $1,000 per year on clothes per person?
All this shows me is that this family is living right up against their means like so many others today.

By my calculations they have 35700 in disposable income.

Why? The math will never make that a better option.

They would not have a 30% effective tax rate if the have the 401(k) salary deferral, mortgage and property tax amounts shown. It would be closer to 20% than 30%.

It seems you're unfamiliar with cost of living in areas other than the south.

Every last expense including funding retirement and various insurances are included, and they still have almost $500 left over every month. They're doing everything right it seems, and the OT is still bitching. Classic.

I pay 1900 for 2 kids in daycare. 24k for 1?

Where are you paying $950 per year per kid for day care?
ETA: And yes, I know what you meant. Get out of the south and realize that stuff doesn't cost the same everywhere.

I honestly can't wait for your "So I knocked up Mrs. Pecker" thread
I think in 6-7 years when I'm 35 I'll have enough money and be comfortable enough that I could entertain the idea of having one child.
Mrs Pecker, on the other hand, I just don't see her getting there. She's anti-baby. It's a career thing for her too, as we've discussed many times.
Right now I want to buy fast cars and travel, not change diapers and smell bad things. At least I know that I'm not ready for a baby.

Only a few of those things are “necessary” things that are dependent on the location they live. If they didn’t want to be “scraping by” there’s several things they could cut down on.

I’m not the one who posted the article about how they’re “scraping by” - they’ve opened themselves up to criticism and scrutiny.

How many kids do they have? If they have two in daycare in SF, I don't see what's so unusual.

And yet you included them.

It's a hypothetical. Try reading.
And the fact that they aren't actually scraping by just makes your analysis of their situation worse.

One child. Idgaf if you’re in Dubai. For 24k a year, you could hire a stay-in nanny.

Haha what "lessons" are these kids getting. Send their arse to the Y.
Also, drop a vacation and ditch the car payment. Lastly, WTF is consumer debt and why is it in your budget?

I don't think those people know what "disposable income" means.
