He made a statement that he wouldn't live much longer about 20 years ago. He was a smoker and Wild Turkey fiend and made it to 87.

He was big on promoting from within. A woman who was his long time executive assistant eventually became CEO after he retired.

The guy was a visionary who was able to thrive in a brutal industry. Read a book once about the friendly rivalry he had with AA’s Bob Crandle. Good Stuff.

I was taking a flight from San Anonio to Dallas in the mid 90s. Herb stood at the door to the plane, shook everyone's hand and thanked them for flying southwest.
After we took off he walked through the plane and stopped randomly to ask people what they were doing well and where they needed to improve. He had a note pad and wrote down every comment.
He was a fantastic CEO.
I'll add this is why the airline industry is so crappy now. I'll bet the executives at AA, United, etc don't fly on their own commercial flights.
