I’m a Catholic convert from Southern Baptist. I 1000% believe that Catholicism is the true Christian religion and its teachings are what the earliest churches taught.

However, my struggle is the concept that God isn’t real. I feel all religion is made up to help humanity throughout history cope with fears and things beyond our control, especially death. I think as our societies, values, and knowledge evolves, we change religion to fit our current thinking. For one instance, polytheism evolving to monotheism.

My view is that there is no objective truth in religion bc that “truth” changes throughout history and cultures. Only science and reason hold truths that do not change with whims of society. I’m having trouble committing to agnosticism/atheism but don’t want to fully give up the possibility on God.

Anyone else struggle with this?

Yes, but getting them to admit it to themselves or others is another story.

I go through time periods of doubt and disbelief with God but then every now and then there is always something that happens to remind me that God is there

Be a good person. If you die and find out hell is real, it would really suck to have been a shitty person.

All the time. Keep attending Mass. Fake it till you make it is real, I think.

Read some Richard Dawkins. That will erase all doubts you may have about the truth.

I mean its called faith for a reason

I think a lot of people go through this struggle in life, I have many times when life has been dark for me

I'll say this, science hasn't proved or disproved religion, but some scientific law/theorems point to the possibility of an after life.

I am not crazy religious but from my experiences in life and having been around science for decades, I personally believe there a higher up but thats just me

Just meditate and appreciate your time on earth. If there is or isn’t a God, life was a blessing regardless

Reading Dawkins for theological or metaphysical insight is like asking Mike Leach for soccer strategy. Sure, it sounds believable, but it's only because he's intelligent.

The response of a simpleton.

ETA: Of course Jesus doesn’t support that and no good Catholic would either. The problem is this is an issue of imperfect people trying to deal with an utterly non-religious problem. Anyone that claims Catholicism equates to pedophilia is a complete fool. No human institution is without flaws but the basic tenets of Catholicism are the same as the original teachings of Christianity.

Sometimes I picture Hell as the way to go. We may be wrong about it's torturous nature. What if it's just non-stop WGAF fun? Think of all the cool people already there. Who doesn't want to hang out and drink with Jim Morrison, Nicole Simpson and JFK?

what's the old analogy re: priest and atheist debating this? priest says "if I am wrong I will have wasted a lifetime, if you are wrong, you will have wasted an eternity"

Typical catholic response. "It wasnt that big of a deal. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!"

I was raised Catholic, but when I became old enough to makes sense of things I realized no virgin can give birth, nobody dies and rises 3 days later, no one walks on water, burning bushes don’t talk, no man can part an entire sea, there is no hell, especially is God forgives all things and people, God doesn’t have a plan for everyone, because if so, I wouldn’t have of seen so many kids die in my profession. The Catholic religion has way too many fabrications for me to be 100% committed to so much nonsense.

I’ve actually learned a lot about the Jewish faith in the last 5 years from my SO. But I’m content in just believing there is some sort of creator of this world and being spiritual.
Other than that I’m going to die when I die and go where everyone else that dies goes. Probably the same place I was before I was born.

You have come to the right place!

And newsflash, you are not Catholic. You are an agnostic pretending to be Catholic to satisfy your local societal norms or the expectations of your family members. Not judging, but Catholics do not believe religion is made up.
