I can say this without a doubt….H-E-B/Central Market is without a doubt the best grocer in the country.
Used to live in FL. Have been to Publix in FL, SC, GA, and AL. H-E-B is GOAT.

Friend,
There is little to figure out. Publix is an average grocery store that charges premium prices. It has gained through some unknown method a groupie following in Florida and somehow parlayed that into a growing monopoly in Florida. It is the Bucee’s or emperor without clothes of grocery stores.
Specifically, their BOGO’s are rarely better priced than GV every day prices. BOGO chicken breasts for instance are $8/lb making the effective price $4/lb. The chicken is not organic or free range. Fresh Marker and Whole Foods have better quality at better prices on chicken breast.
Publix deli sandwiches are decent, but not worthy of the fame attached to them. Based on number Publixite recommendations I have twice gotten a chicken tender sub. The chicken was dry and caked with a tasteless batter. No amount of their fructose thick honey mustard was going to salvage this carb rocket. The sliced deli meat sandwiches are decent enough, though, they all taste the same. In the world of delis, it gets a 4/10. Do people who sing Publix deli’s praises know what a good deli tastes like?
The produce section is another display of mediocrity masquerading behind absurd prices. $5 for a pound of tiny bruised Driscolli strawberries while better Driscollis are at the same time $2/lb at Sam’s.
Baked goods are often baked offsite, dry, and again overpriced. I will occasion a black and white cookie, knowing full well ahead of time it will be a disappointment. Every grocery has better cookies and their cakes are a study in uninspired batter with overly sweet icing.
There is not a single department in Publix that exceeds average. The only Publix made item that is remarkable is its premium ice cream, which is superior to Blue Bell. I think its primary selling point and attraction for most is its relative exclusivity — its high prices keep out the lower classes. Such people who care about such things have no love of the good life, thus, they love Publix.
A run through HEB, Central Market, Wegman’s, or even Mariano’s would open their eyes at what an above average grocery store looks like. I imagine, though, that most Publixites have no passion for groceries and will continue to give patronage to the most uninspired grocery store in America.
Yours,

Friend,
This morning’s presence owes itself to me getting ready for the day. I went to bed with the sun just before 9 and am now well rested with a day I pray will be productive now beginning. I am attempting to read Kierkegaars’s full corpus this summer, an exercise Uncle says is dangerous. But I am a man of danger and am more than halfway through. Fear and Trembling remains my favorite of his works thus far. However, I continue to return to The Lily of the Field and the Bird of the Air for its brevity and beauty.
Tomato sandwich in hand as I type between bites, an updated Top 10 Pancho’s Mexican Buffet letter awaits finishing as well. There is much to do and few hours are more productive for me than that between two and three when the world rests quietly around me.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

You can tell he is gearing up for another ban, be it from the mods or “self-imposed”

HEB is not unionized. Kroger is, even in Texas, and Publix apparently is too.
Another neat thing I found out about Publix is that it is partially employee owned. Only workers and board members are allowed stock ownership at certain times of the year.
So, Gladys who has works as a checker for 30 years with Publix retires nearly a millionaire with her Publix stock.
I knew Publix was large, but here are some sales figures for the last quarter of 2022:
quote:
Publix’s sales for the three months ended Dec. 31, 2022, a 14-week quarter, were $15.3 billion, a 22% increase from $12.6 billion in 2021, a 13-week quarter.
For those in Rio Linda, that would mean Publix is moving over a billion dollars in groceries each week.
Publix also started the started doing free prescriptions on certain generic medications and low cost (7.50) 90 day supplies on other generic medications. Walmart copied them, but has a bigger list.

It's 1 mile away. I don't have a "food" budget. Pub subs are awesome. I buy alcohol at Total Wine. $5 sushi on Wednesdays. Clean store, friendly employees. Beats the heck out of the surly workers I encountered in Baton Rouge grocery stores.

Found a cheese grader at the Publix in Destin I've been looking for for years, so there's that. Their shite is high, but nice stores and wtf, it's vaca baby.

Winn Dixie isn’t overpriced. He’s wrong again as usual.
In NOLA their non sales prices are priced the same as Dorigncs with Walmart service.

Friend, sometimes when people rave about something and I don’t understand why, I think I am missing out on something.
But often, it’s just that I’m right and the majority is wrong.
Thanks for reminding me of that, friend.

I liked shopping Publix for BOGO sales, but there are none up here in NW Arkansas. I wish I had more options than Walmart or Harps.

It highly depends on who is behind the counter.

What you're failing to grok is that H-E-B in Texas are clean with nice people, stocked shelves, but your shite costs more than what we pay.
I never was a stranger in a strange land.
Learn something everyday though.

Calvin’s still does AFAIK. I shop there almost daily and don’t mind the high prices bc of the excitement customer service and the fact that I can get in and out very quickly.

Publix in my area currently has BOGO free chicken breast. Nobody else does that kind of thing.
Winn Dixie has this fairly regularly lol
