Help me diagnose my A/C issue...condensing unit not turning on...

So, this is the scenario I have observed with my A/C unit. The system will be working fine, cooling the house at normal temp (eg, 72)...and then at some time during day, the house will get warm but the fan is still running...I go outside and the condensing unit has stopped (hence the lack of cold air coming out). I go to turn the system off at the Thermostat and the fan will run for hours before stopping.
Is the sign of a bad thermostat?
After stopping and being off for some time, I will turn the system back on and the system will work fine for a while (ie, house will cool down again) before the condensing unit stops working again.
Thermostat probably 6-7 years old.
Thoughts?

this is note from maintenance visit:
Residential Service customer made service call because upstairs ac
was not working. Upon arrival applied demand for ac on upstairs Tstat.
System was operating as intended. While inspecting outdoor unit the 24
volts at contactor was lost. Made sure all electrical connections were
good at outdoor unit. Then went to indoor unit and made sure all
electrical connections were good. Also removed Tstat from wall to
ensure all low volt wires were in proper place. Did not find any electrical
faults. Reinstalled Tstat on wall applied cooling demand gave unit 30
minutes of run time and did not lose 24 volts again. If we are called
again by homeowner within 30 day for same issue no service fee will be
applied.

bad contactor maybe?
Was it making a loud buzzing sound in the past when it clicked on?

Did you check for frozen lines?
I'd have a hard time thinking a low voltage machine like a thermostat would work intermittently.

Had this same problem with my guest house AC. Buddy of mine who is an AC guy said the capacitor was bad. He changed it and now it works.

Sounds like it's freezing-up, thawing, then freezing-up again.

The Chinese must be laughing their asses off because I've never had this issue prior to the past couple of years. I just replaced one of mine too.

I could be completely wrong but my first suspicion would be that the coils are freezing over, and the condensing unit has some auto shut-off feature. I would clean the coils and see if that helps, as it probably needs to happen anyway.

quote:Sounds like condenser is overheating and your safety shutoffs are kicking in. (I had a similar problem but not exact). Mine wasn't cooling at all.
I go to turn the system off at the Thermostat and the fan will run for hours before stopping.
So in summary, disregard my entire post.

I have this same issue happening now.
My A/C guy was out yesterday and it's my control panel on the furnace/blower unit inside. He had to order a new one.
It could be that capacitor though. I've seen that happen before.

Call a repairman. Sounds like a capacitor.

Chicken You see the brown plastic piece in the middle of this picture? You can press it in with a screwdriver once the unit stops. If it comes on then you're either not getting the signal from the t-stat to trip it or it's just a bad contactor.

Check for ants in the contactor. Seen that a lot when I worked in hvac.

Your outside unit needs to be cleaned.
Leave it off for a couple of hours so the ice that formed on your attic cooling unit melts.

Sounds like you need the capacitor replaced.

So if it's the capacitor and I was the first to diagnose it, do I get a month of immunity?
