Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, otherwise known as cordyceps or zombie-ant fungus, infects insects such as ants or spiders. Like other parasites, cordyceps drains its host completely of nutrients before filling its body with spores that will let the fungus reproduce
I think i saw how this plays out in The Last of Us

Nah, there are other cooler, and more terrifying zombie fungi.
One attacks its host (grasshoppers, katydids, etc.), and heads for the brain. It then drives the host to water, which it needs to breed. Once there it basically forces the host to drown itself.
Another attacks lady beetles where it multiplies and forces the beetle to the highest portion of a plant or tree where it then releases its spores to be carried on the wind.
Another is basically a STD that infects the Asian lady beetles. It just multiplies around its nether regions, eventually killing its host.
