This hose came off and black smoke started up out of a Chevy avalanche. Any clue as to what this hose does?

That's your flux capacitor dude.

Just kidding, it's your blinker fluid hose.

No no no, it started spewing smoke, but didn’t send us to another point in time, so I’m pretty sure it never worked properly.

Black smoke or steam?

Looks like a radiator hose. Re-attach with pliers or screwdriver, refill radiator with water, drive it to the shop.

That leads to the heater coil on your truck, if I'm seeing the picture correctly. Same thing happened on my Silverado.

Chances are that white stub out you see got soft and broke. You should be able to pick one up at Autozone to replace it.

I put fresh orange blinker fluid in before we left, so that’s not it.

Winner winner chicken dinner. How can we remove the piece already there? We can’t get the white thing off.

That's the bitch of it. You can try to fight it with a screwdriver and a wrench. But they make a specific tool that slides behind that white stub out to release it; similar to the tool that removes a shark bite from plumbing.

The tool is a white plastic circle. I bought mine at NAPA when I had that issue.
