Does this fatality count as caused by Helene?
A 62 year old woman ignored the barracade warnings and additional warnings that I-40 was closed. She drove on I-40 until she hit a "hole in the road". She in her car plummeted 75-100 feet down but missed the river. She's dead. Fortunately no one was injured trying to save her.

I recently saw a list on some page on fb of missing. Dont remember the number but but it seemed like a few were families with same last names.

I know that there is a teacher still missing .. she and her husband floated on the house and then floated into a tree from accounts I read. He’s ok. She’s missing.

If that county voted for Trump, they won't see those trailers until the end of January

Some people in east Tennessee won't be getting passable roads for Christmas.
LINK shows where and what are not functioning roads now. Some of them have will be fixed by dates. Like 6-30-2025

The snow and cold they're getting up there aren't making things any easier.

Has this story about the Amish building cabins that local and state kicked people out of due not meeting code been discussed? Allegedly making the people go back and live in trailers and tents. They weren’t meant for permanent residence, and the Amish know how to build stuff like this.

I haven’t been able check on other sources in this yet.

quote:

The Amish came to Western NC and built 100+ tiny homes to shelter Helene victims from the cold mountain weather.

Local and state authorities kicked the victims out of their houses, saying they didn't pass code.

The report of people being kicked out of lodging seems to be false. The link above has the State Fire Marshall looking into and talking with assorted inspectors.
The letter indicates the number of salaried inspectors that can be involved. There doesn't seem to be any effort to make things easier.

Lots of entities, lots and lots of different jurisdictions.

FEMA is making an effort to close the West Virginia Baw Built road from Bat Cave to Lake Lure. It's in another thread here, linked here for posterity.

Asheville getting better now that you can drink the water.

Lots of restaurants and fast casual dining places have reopened.

For a while there, Five Guys was the only decent option near my hotel.

He found a home for a generator this morning already. He’s taking clothes, blankets and Christmas gifts up as well.

Lawsuits after Katrina for "toxic" chemicals in FEMA trailers. When they were auctioned off, there was a disclaimer "Not suitable for human habitation"

It took a decade for Henderson Auctions, Livingston, LA, to get rid of them after they made a deal with the Feds to obtain all of them. Most like went for deer camps

Meanwhile in California, in Malibu a fire emerged yesterday
quote:

By Tuesday afternoon, the fire had swelled to more than 2,600 acres (1,050 hectares) and was still raging out of control, with the National Weather Service posting a high-danger "red flag warning" because of powerful winds.

More than 700 firefighters were battling the blaze, aided by a fleet of water- and retardant-dropping aircraft, including Super Scoopers and tankers capable of dumping 1,200 gallons (4,500 liters) of retardant at a time.

Tens of thousands of people across southern California had their electricity cut off. Utilities frequently de-energize lines ahead of windy days to reduce the fire risk from downed power lines.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said the state had already secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist with the response.

"Fire officials and first responders are working relentlessly to protect lives and property from the Franklin Fire," Newsom said in a statement.

May we all enjoy such rapid FEMA responses.

Unicoi County TN (Erwin, where the hospital flooded) now has an urgent care facility open. It's serving the folks in Tennessee as well as those in North Carolina for whom it's closer and easier to get to than Asheville.

I remember seeing tons of defunct fema trailers stacked up bumper to bumper outside of Livonia on 190 in a grassy field. So many deer camps in the basin.
