Heartwarming / Heartbreaking Story From New Orleans

Somewhat long read, but a good story.
Family moves here from California and buys a house. Kids meet local friends who start showing up to play. Vast majority of kids who show up are poor, hungry, and have no family life to speak of.
Wife eventually is so moved by this she quits her job and opens up am after-school center. 40-50 kids show up every day, they get homework help, a hot meal, stuff to do, 4 hours a day after school and 4 hours a day on Saturdays.
Basically is a labor of love for the family. Donations and support are inconsistent. Companies are resistent to help. Very little government money available. They put a ton of their own money into this.
10 years later, they are broke and have to shut down the facility. No savings and are now depending on help from others. They have tons of debt from money they borrowed to run the facility.
We piss away millions upon millons of government dollars on useless bullshite and can't help these kids. We have nonprofits that raise tons of money using charitable donations, yet that money goes to art studios and homeless crackheads.
I think it's also fair to say that this couple perhaps, while having a labor of love, may not have had enough business sense to make the numbers work, and/or to raise enough awareness with good PR to bring in more donors.
We can and should blame the parents (or parent) for not taking care of their kids, not having jobs, being crackheads, going to jail, etc. Most of these kids have no sense of life outside the hood, they don't know anyone who lives outside the hood. It's just a pathetic cycle.

Sometimes you have to learn how and when to say no

Multiple people in city political circles have told me that zero government dollars was used to pay for that trip - that it was all with private money.
I don't know how I feel about private enterprise taking government officials on trips. Yeah they are not wasting tax dollars but that opens up a whole new set of issues.

Where are the parents to these 40 something kids? Why aren't they responsible for them? Why am I responsible for them?

not so fast my friend

Local 10 News asked about funding for the trip, and Cantrell said, “It is both publicly and privately funded.”
A spokesperson for the mayor did not provide the details on the cost.

That picture tells me all I need to know.
Liberal do-gooder gets taken advantage of by families who allow 5 year old kids to have dreadlocks and drink Grape Crush.

Reality is this:
You can be responsible for paying for their after-school activities.
Or, you can be responsible for paying for their jail time, because that's where most of these kids are headed without any intervention.
Yes, the parents should be responsible for these kids. But they don't do it.

What station is that?
It was hard to believe that it was all private.

Reality is, we will probably be responsible for both for the vast majority of these kids.

Because we give the parents free shite and have bread this culture.
And you do get credits for day care and after school programs. Especially if you are a single mother.
What more are we supposed to do?

Maybe. Sure seems like when kids are shown a better life is out there, many times, they are able to take advantage of it. History is filled with tons of stories of kids who made it out of the hood.
But just like little celebrity kid isn't getting into college without the parents bribing the school, little hood kid isn't getting into college without some help from outside the hood.

It’s a shame that projects like this can’t get funding, when our city government blows the annual budget for this non profit in the course of a month with stupid things.

She is certainly keeping the kids healthy that will be keeping our prisons full in a few short years.
