It's been about 10 years now, but I had to visit Detroit often for a couple years for work.

1) One of my guys up there gave me a drive around tour, some of the "bad" but not "worst" areas litterly had fences around entire neighborhoods. It was cheaper to fence them off and not have to spend public money supporting. We drove on the outer edges of some really bad areas and it was unreal how abandoned, rundown and depressing places were.

2) Luckly the site I visited was near Bloomfield Hills, a wealthy part of the suburbs. In complete contrast, it was not rare to see $100k cars driving around. Clearly there was a disparity in wealth.

Granted, I didn't go into some of the worst areas, but I never felt as though my life was danger. Like anywhere, know your surroundings and you should be fine.

Go to the Henry Ford Museum! It originally consisted of Henry Ford and Thomas Edison’s personal collections. You can view the chair Lincoln was shot in (along with what was in his pockets), the car Kennedy was shot in, Rosa Park’s bus, along with tons of cars and trains, appliances, etc. It one of the best museums in the country.

Detroit’s actually pretty cool and not very big. You can walk from one end to the other in 20 minutes. I never felt unsafe in the more populated areas.

Umm, you must mean downtown.

Detroit has a massive land area for it's population.

Just watch out for the border guards at South Detroit.

I've been to Detroit recently.
There are plenty of nice areas that you can have a good time.
Enjoy one of the many brewpubs.

You have a better chance of dying in Nola. Go to Greektown and eat at Pizzapopulus.

Ha, yeah I’m talking about downtown. From the stadiums to the river or Greektown to MGM is 20-25 minute walk.

I did a week in Detroit about 6 years ago.

As an old country boy from Louisiana I was tripping on the whitetail bucks cruising around the neighborhood we were in

There bodies are huge compared to La or Texas

They are scattered all over the roads too where vehicles hit them, you might see 7-8 a day dead on the side of the road.

If you're in the very core of the city (see this map) I wouldn't worry about much. I've been out late at night after a few drinks, not too worried.

Outside this core (and Woodward up to the old GM building), you're in a totally different ballgame. Keep it very cool.

Bruh….most people on here have never been to Detroit. It gets a bad rap for a reason, but it’s a lot better downtown than it used to be. Burbs are very nice. The advice above is great.
Maybe the Tigers are playing at home? Comerica park is very nice & the sport district they’re building down there is cool. Still can’t believe Red Wings aren’t playing in the old Joe Lewis arena anymore!!!
Greek Town is great for eating & casinos.
They have some jazz clubs downtown but they still might be closed?
Windsor, Canada is right across the bridge. Grosse Point, Birmingham areas are top notch. Henry Ford museum in greenfield village is interesting.
Buddy’s pizza in Warren is THE best & it’s not even close.
Detroit Wayne co airport, especially Delta McNamara Terminal is one of nicest I’ve flown into.

check out a tigers game

I always wish I could have seen a game in old Tiger Stadium.

There was something about it, from just seeing it on TV at least, that made it seem to be the coolest looking old sports venue ever.

I went two years ago and also enjoyed it. The area by the river and around the GM building was cool IMO

I liked the downtown portion by the river, but besides that, Detroit was a little depressing.

With that said, a lot of the Detroit suburbs are beautiful!

I saw a handful of games there, and you're right - it was great - a throwback to the old days. I went to a lot of games at Fenway, and I'd put them as equal (but different) in terms of atmosphere and desirable places.

But the ticket-window staff at Tiger Stadium were notorious for being assholes and lying about the restricted-view seats, of which there were many.

Fenway's my favorite of parks I've been to.

The old "band box" style ballparks were simply the best.

Greek Town is cool, there's a casino right down there, the riverwalk is nice, you can go across the river to Canada, Belle Isle is nice...also make sure to check out Slow's BBQ for some good eats.

When I was last there for a wedding, downtown was jumping and lots of fun.
