Sucks, but dogs tend to do okay with a missing rear leg, once they get used to it - some of them better than okay.

buddy of mine just went though this with a Doberman. Procedure went well and the dog is doing good.

For us, the worst part was trying to keep her from being too active. You're definitely making the right decision and your dog will not be slowed down by it.

There is no easy answer. Sorry for your situation with a beloved dog no doubt.

Actually it was a very easy decision. Had it been $2K I would have put him to sleep. $500 is pretty cheap I think.

Previous weekend he stopped walking on his leg. I thought he sprained it or hurt it because he did escape from his fenced in area. After 3 days I started feeling his leg and noticed a knot the size of a golf ball midway down his leg. Took him in Saturday morning and told them I thought maybe it was broke or maybe someone shot him. They showed me the x-rays and you could see the bone deteriorating compared to the other leg in the x-ray. They plan to check his glands and lymph nodes before surgery to make sure it hasn't spread before amputating it tomorrow afternoon. They say it is common in older large breeds.

$500? Wouldn't have given that a second thought. At $2K I would have had to think about it. I would probably take out a second mortgage for our 5 year old bulldog right now to be honest with you. He's like our only child.

3 legs usually don't slow a dog down.

My grandparent's dog went on like a further eight years with only one rear leg. She was still fast too. Got really bad arthritis in the hips that did her in. She had got caught in a Coyote trap and came back with a mangled up leg.
