Having a degree isn't an indicator of competency

I was watching season 21 of Survivor tonight, and in one of the later episodes this black chick who is apparently a teacher didn't even know the correct pronunciation for the word snuffed. She thought it was smuffed. How does someone who is barely literate get a degree, and then actually get certified to teach kids? Degree mill universities like Southern are really diluting the value and accomplishment of even earning a degree. If it was up to me I would require college students to take a basic literacy test much like the ACT/SAT where they have to get at minimum a certain score prior to awarding them with a college diploma.

Some people have words they simply have a hard time pronouncing. In fact, I'm sure everyone has a word they have trouble saying. That doesn't make them any less intelligent.

Rote learning isn't preparing students for the real world. It's apparent a lot of students are just regurgitating what they've memorized in a text book on tests without properly learning the concepts and how everything fits together. Being able to apply what you've studied to come up with a solution to a unique situation is a true test of aptitude and understanding.

For some reason I have trouble with the word natural. I always want to turn it into national and I graduated college with a good GPA.
