Full Story - Philly.com
UPDATE:
Thanks to all that have contributed. While Louisiana is rarely first in anything, I am hopeful that this program will soon catch on here, because Lord knows, we have some baby mamas that deserve to be set free.
quote:
The week before Mother’s Day, Philadelphia is joining organizations around the country as part of the National Mama’s Bail Out Day to give incarcerated mothers an opportunity to spend Mother’s Day with their families and build community through gatherings that highlight the impact of inhumane and destructive bail practices on Black communities and support the base-building of local organizations working with communities on the frontlines of mass incarceration.
quote:
We will bail out mamas in all of their varieties- queer, trans, young, elder, and immigrant. The more money we raise, the more women we can bring home for Mother’s Day.
quote:
It’s going to take our collective effort to give as many Black mama’s their freedom this Mother’s Day, as possible. When mothers languish in jail because of cash bail, our families and communities suffer. The costs are devastating.
quote:
Organizing groups:
No215Jail Coalition
Philadelphia Student Union
Malcolm X Grassroots Movement- Philadelphia
Sankofa Community Empowerment
Philadelphia Black History Collaborative
Youth United for Change
Caucus of Working Educators
Black Lives Matter Philadelphia
UPDATE:
quote:
WE DID IT! Thank you to all of you who have spread the word about this amazing opportunity, and or donated. We really appreciate it. Because so many of you answered the call, we have a chance raising more funds to bail more mamas out. So we're raising our goal to $10,000.
quote:
With $10,000 we would be able to bail out over 10 mamas!

It would please me to see Tarsha Clark-Amar be put in charge of spearheading this program in Baton Rouge.
She has leadership experience and is well-connected within our community with established and trusting relationships that she has built throughout the years. And anything that she accidentally overlooks regarding the bylaws of this foundation can easily be re-tweaked and backdated.

Are they doing this for Father's Day as well?
Oh, wait...nevermind.

With $10,000 we would be able to bail out over 10 mamas!
That's just really sad. I guess they don't even have any property of their own to put up either.

That's for another discussion and maybe this is something they can't control.
But what they can control is not putting themselves in this situation in the first place --- and this is often overlooked by many that support this cause. Shift blame and shift responsibility, play victim and race card.

So a $1000 bond is inhumane and destructive? Get real.

Do these women's families want them home?
So their bail is a grand each, 10% of that is a $100. Your telling me that these women's families can't scrape together $100?

quote:And your article is talking about raising money for being bailed out. I think my comment is very relevant to this discussion. If they actually worked, or saved money if they do work instead of spending it on bullshite, they wouldn't need to ask people for money to get bailed out. That's what I was getting at.
That's for another discussion and maybe this is something they can't control.
And you're right, it could all be prevented by them not getting locked up in the first place.

quote:That's what I was thinking too. Thought maybe their bail may be $10,000 each, so $1000 to actually get them out. Not sure though bc I didn't read all that bullshite.

Hell yeah!
Let's do this!
Forget getting my mom and SO anything! Those dindu's need our support now!
Or, I'm going to go ahead and say no to this lovey cause because if they weren't breaking the F'ing law they'd be at home raising their kids like all of us law abiding, tax paying citizens are doing.

This may be one of the dumber things I have read. I guess everyone has their own reasoning to donate money.
Why are they in jail in the first place?
