I came.

I have fired many people. Earlier in my career it was sometimes a very tough thing to do. I remember getting a phone call from the wife of someone I fired close to the holidays and she really ripped into me. I felt bad for a bit. Eventually, I grew to learn that people really fire themselves, I was just the one making it official. The employee should usually be the first one to know they are going to be fired.

Never one on one to fire someone, but have had to sit on multiple councils that decided staffing at a school. Then sit in on the meeting with those teachers. Those can get complicated when you have to decide by a combination of seniority and program needs. It sucks to have to let a good teacher go because someone happened to be in a building in a year when there weren't any redistricting/student reductions before them.
Usually if it was a quality teacher we'd put the word out to friends at schools who are under staffed to check the pool to at least get them in the door elsewhere.
It sucks though.

Yes. But I usually do it verbally instead of physically. Less chance of getting sued.

Several.
One did give me a big if PTSD, if you will. She was a single mother of twin 4 YO girls. Beautiful little family. But... She was stealing time. Theft by hours submitted. Nothing I could do to help her.

Yep, he missed work because he was on a drug binge. Felt a little bad that he had come across the country for the job but I couldn't have an unreliable person.

Yes.
They cried while I stared at them until they got up and cleaned out their desk.

Yup. Sucks. Had to lay off about 20 people at once. Most were easy but a few were tough choices. Had to cut the crew to 15 when work was dwindling

I have never fired anyone that didn't deserve it. I started to fire one the other day for not doing his job and he's frumpy as hell .....but it's Christmas time and he has two step kids at home so if he doesn't step it up after the 1st ....he's gone

It's on my plate for today. It's not the best part of my job - that's for sure. Probably done it 5 times in my career so far.

if it's part of your job, you kind of have to do it, otherwise, you'll find yourself on the other side of the pink slip.

Have you had to look a man or woman in the eye and tell them they no longer have a job? Yep
No longer have a income to feed their kids? You can't think like that. It's a business decision. Nothing more.
How did you handle it emotionally? You don't bring emotion into it. There's a really good scene in "Moneyball" about cutting a player. That pretty much explains how you handle it.
Here it is.

As opposed to?

I work in HR, fire and hire people daily. Doesn't bother me a single bit, usually its their own fault for some stupid shite they've done. Like I tell them, its just business.

Yes.
They were grown-arse men who knew what the issues were and what the ramifications would be if they didn't correct the issues. They were offered the resours needed to improve, and were given multiple chances to improve their performance, but didn't.
It was their choice, not mine. What really bothered me was keeping liabilities around longer than I should have.

Yes. Quite a few times.

Relieved. Every one of them was given multiple chances to improve job performance, but the ones I fired never improved. If they had done that, I wouldn't have had to fire them.
