Have you ever heard of the 4 color map theorem?

The new US map thread reminded me of this. The idea is that if given a map, say the US for example, you can always color the map with 4 colors so that no two states with the same color will border each other. It doesn't matter what the map looks like.

That doesn’t prove him wrong. You can color that big square in the lower right orange instead of purple

It was proved a few years ago. A lot of people didn't like the proof because it involved enumerating cases with a computer - it was kind of ugly, and mathematicians like elegant.


ETA: damn. 'a few years' translates to 1976. frick, I'm old.

There was a Math class (junior level in college) for which that was an extra credit question. I had two friends who raged about not knowing where to start.

What if there was a state that was a square at the location of the Four Corners. What color would it be in order to not be touching another state that was the same color as itself?
