False.

In regards to faith, have you gone to church to speak with a minister?

I grew up going to church. My parents go every Sunday. As an adult, I’m the guy that goes on Christmas Eve and Easter. I pray at night and I am a believer, but I wouldn’t consider myself someone that has been saved from the ills of depression by religion. I kind of wish I could have that feeling. I’m sure if I went more than twice a year, things would be different.

That said, I don’t think religion HAS to be the thing that saves you. Maybe you haven’t found the right church. Maybe you have found the right therapist??

You don’t know what depression is. Get off your high horse.

Or a pediatric hospital? Or a third world country? What’s your point?

My first deployment I didn't care if I returned. Of course that doesn't mean I was willing to kill myself, but I was ok with whatever happened.

I used to think people were cowards that took the easy way out, and never understood how someone could get to that point.
After the past month, I understand how people get those thoughts. I have had a rough six months, but the past month has absolutely destroyed me. I've had alot of bad thoughts, suicidal thoughts, praying to die, and not wanting anything to do with life anymore. It has opened my eyes. I could never go through with it because of my faith, but at least I know I won't criticize anyone anymore. Thank God for friends when I've needed them
Cats, this is for you and for all the other desperate posters in this thread:

I've seen it discussed a bit on these boards and elsewhere, but we are on the precipice of a long-overdue mental health revolution in this country...psychedelics.

I believe that psilocybin ("magic mushrooms") are going to play the biggest role. There is already serious work being done with this substance and our guys and gals coming back home with PTSD.

I saw someone recommend a spiritual retreat. I can second that notion - Manresa is a good one close to BR/NOLA for anyone who cares. It's Jesuit, but that doesn't really matter. It's a facility that can be restorative to the soul.

I would take it even farther and recommend a psilocybin retreat. There are really only 2 countries where it's legal - Jamaica and The Netherlands. Jamaica is superior, as Holland only allows truffles - a particularly weak type of mushroom that isn't as useful for depression and other mental conditions (particularly those arising from repressed trauma.)

This facility in Jamaica is absolutely legit - and they are doing astounding work on a daily basis. I have seen with my own eyes unbelievable transformations in people suffering through life as mere husks.

I know this sounds like crazy shite - which is what it sounded like to me before I actually looked into it.

Peace.

The Watapur District in 09 left me the realization of why life really sucked at the time and my ex-wife treated me the way she did. Deployments put a serious strain on marriage.

Last year at the beginning of Covid my wife and I witnessed a suicide. An elderly man jumped from a bridge and landed on the road in front of us while driving up to a boat launch. The police that came to the scene said it was the 5th one at that bridge since he has been working. Every time I drive by there I get chills thinking about it. Can't imagine seeing a family member like this.

You'll see hell too for telling people this. That is an evil attitude, and then you sin by telling people who may be on the brink instead of attempting to understand or help. I feel sorry for you.

You must consider yourself christian, and you may even believe your opinion on suicide to be true, but your actions, even on this stupid message board, could contribute to someone's downfall. As a christian you are supposed to raise people up, not put them down.

Believe what you will, but remember the beatitudes. Remember the greatest commandment. Your statements go against both.
