That's nice, but this thread is about things of value that were thrown away.

A few years ago I purchased a Samsung galaxy phone right after they launched.

It was a Sunday night and I remember coming home with the phone in hand. I also had a bit of trash in hand that I was going to throw in the recycle bin.

I tossed the trash and called it a night.

The next morning I couldn't find my phone. Looked everywhere and couldn't find it and then remembered the recycle bin. Trash picked up that morning and it was already gone.

Called the recycling company, who said that my truck had already been processed. . .

I can't say with absolute certainty that the phone got thrown away, but I never did find it!

I was shoveling a small drainage ditch in my pasture and took my wedding band off because it was pinching my finger against the shovel handle. I took it off and dropped it into my pocket.
The next day I couldnt find it anywhere. I went back to that area and searched for hours.
I then purchased a metal detector for around 150 bucks. The metal detector arrives and I begin searching for the ring, by this time it was 3 weeks later.
In 5 min the unit triggers and identifies as potential gold. I dig a huge chunk out the ground and scan it. No beep. I dig another chunk up, it signals. I break that piece in two, one half signals. I break it again and there in the black clay is a shiny object, it was my wedding band dug from about 8" under the mud and cowshit.
If someone saw me at that moment they would have thought I was renacting the raising of Simba in the Lion King.
I then sold the metal detector back on Ebay for 10 bucks less than I paid.

In my earlier "not so cool" days, I was pretty big into Magic:the Gathering. Say what you want about the game but there were some cards that were rather valuable and I had quite a few. As I grew up, the cards found their place in a box in the closet and I forgot about them for a long time. When my wife and I were purging before a house move, the box ended up in the trash of course.

Then, later on I was talking with a guy and we got on the subject of MtG and told him about my card collection. I figured the popularity of the game fell off so the cards weren't as valuable any more but he ensured me the value was still very high and he would buy them from me. He just wanted to know what I had so he could give me a price. My heart sunk when I discovered I no longer had them. After looking up the current value of the cards I had, I stopped when I got up to $7500 because I got too depressed about it and I was only about a third of the way through my collection. If I had to guess, in all, my cards were between 17-20k. My wife was NOT happy when I told her that.

This past Christmas my wife had put some stuff in a box and it was stacked near a bunch of stuff that was set up for me to take out to recycle. We aren't exactly organized all that well and didn't communicate, so I through the box out. $160 kid gift was in said box.

Got bitched at for a week for that stunt.

My wife nearly threw out a letter addressed to me from the Prince of Wales because she thought it was junk mail. True story.

accidentally threw away a $500 dollar gift card. I was poor and in college too. I dug through enough trash to last me a life time.

Still never found it

When I was a kid I threw out my retainer in the McDonald's trash dispenser and my boy Valluzzo let me go through the trash until I found it.

I buy and sell a lot of toys from the 70s and 80s. I bought a big collection at an estate sale, and in the process ended up with a lot of various parts and accessories that I wasn't able to match with any particular toyline.

I was able to eventually identify most of them. A few were worth five bucks, a few were worth 10, and some were worth a bit more. The bulk of them were not worth much, and I put all of those into a lot and sold it for $25.
In that lot there was a ladder that I could never id. A few months later I found out what it was.

Four balcony tickets for Cats Meow on Sunday night before Marie Gras. We're in my back pocket when the jeans went in the washing machine.

I let my roomate in college use my copy of The Gunslinger to write a paper...My mom bought it new when I was a kid, hated it, and gave it to me.

He gave it back when we moved out, minus dust jacket, highlighted, and inked margin notes. I let him keep it.

It is a 1st/1st, I find out 3 yrs later.

Took off my LSU class ring at a crawfish boil. Never found it and just assumed it ended up in the trash.
