I avoid these threads like the plague usually .
FWIW
There are idiots here giving you bad advice. No, you don't need to see a doc for this (coming from an md)
Clear mucous = viral
Colored could mean anything

Bacterial typically starts with either allergies or a viral infection, an will typically improve after a few days, then worsen after5-7 days. (10% of acute sinusitis cases).

Nasal saline rinses often as you want
Afrin 2 sprays twice daily for 3 days (no more)
Get some Flonase (over the counter) 2 sprays daily for 2 weeks
Aleve 2 pills twice daily for 5 days
Drink plenty of fluids
Get a humidifier at bedtime
If you have allergies, take Claritin for at least the next month, but if you have allergies, you likely need to continue for the spring.

Neti pots have to be cleaned, otherwise you could cause more harm than good.
If you smoke, you're setting yourself up for this many times more in the future. (Stop)

If you have allergies to any of the above, don't take.

Finally, don't go to a message board for medical advice, because idiots respond and you don't know how to sift through right and wrong. You're being told to take meds that could raise your blood pressure to extreme levels, which they are ignorant to the possible severe consequences or have no care/consequence. You're being told to take antibiotics that you probably don't need either.
I am in no way saying that you need to go to the doctor, but sometimes when you don't have the answer, it's a better option than an Internet forum.

Yes, when and only when I cough up colored phlegm. Then I know I have a sinus infection.

Fwiw--I got ahold of a huge bowl of steaming hot pho tai last time I felt like that and it made me feel instantly better. It's like chicken soup on steroids.
Feel better, man.

I seldom ever go to the doctor and have never gone for a cold, but I am in a bad way right now. Headache, cough, green/yellow phlegm, can't breathe out my nose, and an off and on again throbbing in my ear. I've been told it might be a sinus infection by someone not qualified to make a diagnosis.

I am utterly miserable. I have bad allergies but this is definitely something else. Definitely not going to pay $75 for urgent care for this, but is it worthy of a doctor's visit or will OTC medication suffice? I can't imagine trying to sleep tonight with this again. I tried some Suphedrine decongestant last night as it was all I had other than allergy medicine and it was completely useless.

If it lasts greater than 2 weeks,I usually get a script of Augmentin for a sinus infection otherwise mucinex, flonase, and zyrtec daily until the symptoms subside can take up to a month sometimes when its your sinuses. The pollen is terrible right now and if your allergic to it you won't feel better until it clears.

I coughed up some this morning thanks to the Mucinex DM.

Dispense it in a plastic bottle and share with the OT.

If you feel bad enough to be concerned, go see your doctor. A diagnosis can only be made after a thorough exam by someone qualified. Follow his/her advice and treatment regimen and I'm sure you'll feel better soon. Unless it's cancer or something.

A good rule of thumb is: If it's concerning enough to ask the OT, seeing a physician is usually the proper and sensible answer. But this is the OT.

If you think $75 is too much then you aren't sick enough. When it gets bad you pay whatever it is to get better.

I get this all the time with a terrible sore throat. Advil cold and sinus at the pharmacy counter has been a life saver for me. If that doesn't work go to the doc and get a shot. You'll feel better that night.

I'm originally from R-Kansas. Been in south Louisiana for a little over three years now. My sinuses have never been as fricked up as they are now. I have no idea what in the hell is in the air down here, but it's kicking my arse. Seems like a lot of the fellas I work with battle sinus stuff also.

To report back, so far the Mucinex D has worked wonders. I had a lingering headache all day yesterday but it significantly relieved my head pressure and reduced my nasal congestion. I was still stuffy and uncomfortable, but not even close to what I was going through before taking it. Woke up today, spit up a little more plegm, blew my nose a few times, took another round of Mucinex D, and I've been relatively good all day so far.

And I definitely think I'm going to have to make the jump to Claritin D. My allergies have been horrible and the other allergy meds that have worked for me in the past haven't cut it this year. Claritin D absolutely dries me out like nobody's business but I guess I'll just have to deal with that.

And I am a social smoker. Got drunk last weekend and smoked a lot. Might have triggered something I suppose.

Trust me when I say that I definitely don't take what's posted here at face value. Not my first time on the internet.

I was either going to visit a doctor or buy some OTC cold meds. Everything else was pretty much off the table in terms of what my course of action was going to be.

I have terrible allergies every year. I remember a year or so ago I was going through a real bad bout with them and then flew to Ohio for a day. When I got up there it was like my allergies had magically cleared up. This is probably the worst place I could possibley live with my allergies.
