Went to a great uncles funeral and his girlfriend showed up and balled the whole time. His wife wasn't too happy and they had to be separated after the funeral.

I didn't even really know the guy. He was from DeQuincy, need I say more?

I went to a funeral last week for a guy I worked with for the last 20 years. It was a Southern Baptist church and I was the only white person in the room for a full Sunday morning type service. It was enlightening.

Black folks know how to get down at a funeral.

I haven’t been to a lot, but at least 2 were for really distant family friends/acquaintances and I still got really teary-eyed... not sure if it rises to the level of awkward, but it feels really awkward for me to get so sad when I barely/didn’t know the person.

i may have the best story as told to me by my mom:
great-uncle passed away not long before i was borne. he traveled a good bit for work. when he died both of his wives showed up and met for the first time, never knowing that there was "another wife".

Crop dusted while near the casket. Smelled like something died. Made my eyes water.

I said something similar to what you said. I thought I really messed up at the time but realized later it was not that big of a deal.

When I was dating my wife her mom died. I went over to her dad’s house later and met one of her brothers for the first time. He said how are you doing? I said good, good. You? He said i’m doing ok. I instantly felt bad.

At my father's funeral there was another grave dug for another funeral that day that was only about 10 feet to the side of my mom/dad's gravesite. There was a large piece of green fake turf covering it and the dirt pile just to make things neater looking for my dad's graveside service. My cousin's son, about 5 at the time, was running around loose at the time and fell right in the other grave and the fake turf sagged about 2-3 feet into the hole. That boy's face was priceless. It was like he had fallen 100 feet but the fact that it was in a grave scared him pretty good. We all had a good chuckle after my cousin snatched him out of there. Everyone had been told about the other gravesite but when you're 5, well...... It really lightened the mood and my dad would have been laughing hard because he loved my counsin's kids.

Another time, after my favorite aunt died, all of us pallbearers, her nephews, had a pretty funny moment in the limo on the way to the cemetery. My aunt had a really great sense of humor and would often just give you the finger if you got her really good. Well, we had just left Rabenhorst on Florida Blvd and turned down Sherwood Forest (going north). There used to be a mechanical clown in that shopping center at Sherwood and Florida at a snow ball stand. It would have this cheesy clown outfit and facial expression while it was waving at you. As we passed I told everyone that Aunt Sandra probably sat up and gave that damned clown the finger! The limo was full of laughs all the way down Sherwood. Great moment because we all knew it was true.....

I rolled a joint and put it in the pocket of a friend in a coffin.
Didn't have two coins for Charon.

I didn't realize the smell would be that strong.
It was a cop's son so tons of police there too.

I've done the "Good to see you" and felt really awkward about it in the moment, but after being on the other side of the fence I realized it's not that big of a deal. I doubt most people register it, or remember it later if they do. Your mind is kinda elsewhere.

But I did have a relative once who commented to the deceased's family on a sketch of the deceased that was displayed next to the closed coffin: "What a nice charcoal!" Which is not awkward in and of itself, but becomes intensely so you're at a wake for someone who burned to death in a fire.
