there was a time in my 20s when we would work 11pm to 7am. leave work and start drinking. There were times when that lasted to the start of the next shift.

i would need 2 weeks to recover from that now it i ever recovered.

All night Calculus session

Why? Why do you need all night to study, at the beginning of the semester, in calculus?

Last time I did it was my 2nd year in public accounting. Was running multiple audits with a 6/30 deadline and no staff (quit and partner didn't want to hire new staff after busy season). Had 3 large clients finally give me their info the 2nd week of May. Pulled 2 all nighters to get as jump on the work to make sure I got everything to the managing partner with plenty of time to review. As long as I kept plugging along, all I would need to do is take a walk to the kitchen or down the street to the convenience store

MFer let them sit on his desk for over 2 weeks before he touched them That busy season was the last time I put in more than 10 hours a day at his firm

what kind of all nighter we talkin? All night drinking? All night sex session? All night coke binge?

I thought all of those things were implied in an "all nighter".

In college, yes. Pop a 40mg Vivanse and let the fun begin.

Nowadays, hell no.

When I was in college, I would pull all-nighters every other week. I found I could focus much better at 2:00 AM. Prolly took years off my life doing it so much but I certainly never had any immediate negative effects.

I pulled an all nighter friday night. Went to bed at 4am-5am Sat morning. Woke up at 8am, drove home and slept until 7pm that night. Woke up for a little bit, ate dinner, went to bed again by 11pm.

Yes. Until I was in my mid-30's. I just needed a good 8 hours the following night.

After that, it begins to wear on you.

Not possible to have no negative effects. I was more capable of dealing with those effects when I was in my early 20s.

I occasionally have days like this at work today, and it takes me days to recover.

I pulled one all-nighter in college and it went poorly for me for that exam. Never again.

When I was in my twenties, yes. Now, absolutely not. I need some sleep, even if it’s two hours.

Impossible unless you're already "used to" not much sleep. If you get 5-6 hours a night, you've likely forgotten how good it feels to get 8 hours every night for a week. Once I got to 8-9 hours per night for about 2 weeks straight, I could never go back to that difficult-to-describe slight feeling of haziness that inevitably comes after a 4-5 hour night.

It generally sucks but if I’m working I used to could do it. Not studying though that’s just a waste trying. No drinking either.

Last time was when I did an overnight brisket cook on Christmas Eve/Day. I was fine but crashed about 9 pm on Christmas once the kids were asleep.
