They wouldn’t even try. Lack of cell phone access and social media would devastate them.

An all-volunteer, disciplined force is great.
However if presidents want to go to war they should be required to institute a limited exemption free draft to fill out some light infantry units. Would prevent breaking units through unsustainable optempo and would also cool the heels of all the douchebags who support every war and have yellow stickers on their cars but don't actually want to have to risk any chance of sacrificing at all themselves.

I was Army 17-21 with 2 tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I came home and became a drug addict. I eventually got right and graduated college but just being in the military for a few years isnt an indication people will do anything positive after. Especially in war time.

Funny how the older generations forget all the stupid, childish shite they did when they were young and try to compare kids to their 65 yr old mindset. Kids will be kids and putting them under a microscope is to blame for much of the "Boomer" overreaction. Kids had a chance to frick up and learn from it at one time, now they don't always have that chance.
I think you miss the point. Most of those who have served have seen a significant decline in the pool of potential military recruits in the US. The problem is not stupid childish shite. It is becoming harder and harder to find decent recruits and they are still there, but at the same time there has been an increase in obesity or morbidity, children on prescription medications with serious psychological problems, no knowledge of the English language, serious drug abuse, and maladaptive behavior either based on lowering cognitive abilities or an acceptance of deviant behavior.

90% of this board would pass basic and then join the 90% of other veterans who went to the last hard basic training.

From a vet, this is a horrible fricking idea. Just horrible.

The last thing I would want are soldiers under my command who are not there voluntarily. Mandating service removes the opportunity to step up on one's own terms.
Also, look at the success rate of conscript versus professional armies. Conscript armies are for poor countries that cannot afford a real military.

Surely you would make exception for those suffering from painful heel spurs?

This country would out source a war to Black Water mercs before it instituted a draft again.

I can tell you have never served. Last thing we need is someone that wants out, in.
Dumbass concept and it's how you end up like Russia, shitty NCOs as there are only career officers, NCOs stay 8 years max.
Outside of technology, the difference in our military vs others is that even without direction or a leader our soldiers and Marines are able to think and react due to the great training they get from the NCOs.

this guy gets it. the idea, in & of itself, is NOT about only arming & force training millions of 18-20 year olds just the hell of it.
this is about fixing a horrific mentality that exists now.
we need to positively adjust our society towards the value & merit of service for our country, while still keeping many freedoms in place (don't be a complete idiot).
the notion that as service of 2 years is awaiting young people upon HS graduation & as a potential requirement to earn my way into college (which could be a huge positive impact to decrease all of the student loan issues), they will be more inclined to perform positively during their HS years & maintain a higher quality (than the current average) of physical fitness. They can also mature a little sooner instead of the painful late maturity episodes that we see of our youth now, especially all of these triggered soys in college now.
On top of that, the idiotic wasted years of 18-20/21 of service instead of collegiate/townie drunken wastedness would be all but eliminated. that's a HUGE step in the right direction. Because we would decrease the massive wasted degrees of college students who are just in college for the sake of being in college to earn any worthless degree that they can.
Too many of you people (yes, you people) need to open your minds up about the possibilities here & contribute to the ideas instead of shooting them down with 0 positive influence/additional ideas.

much of this base idea can be applied to the thread on How to Fix LA: fix la thread

This thread again?
This is one of those threads that we see maybe four times a year at least.

No because even with people who voluntarily enlist we still have people who are undisciplined and cause problems. It would only get worse if we do that. We aren't in a positon where it is necessary for the security and survival of our country.

Look in the mirror. The rotten culture and society America's youth inherit was not what today's older generations inherited.
I honestly have no idea how the parent generation of an emerging young adult generation that are, systemically, sick and fragile idiots can look at this situation and not wonder if they screwed up along the way. If I had five kids and one of them turned out to be a frick up, I would be wondering what I could have done differently, but I would be pretty confident that the other four success cases validate that it's probably not on me. If all five turn out to be frickups, I and everyone else would rightly blame me.
I guarantee 3 years of being sent to desert shitholes to die for Israel won't fix 18 years of horribly bad parenting.
