Which dog would be a better family dog? One is half cocker spaniel and Chihuahua mix. It's from a co-worker and will be small. The other dog has Australian Shepard/ border collie from it's mom's side and pit/ bull mastiff from the dad's side. So it's gonna be big but friend says it's a great dog and can get for free. The only thing that worries me is that it is 1/4th pit.

If you don't have a big piece of land for this dog to roam, it's going to drive you nuts. Aussies & collies are working dogs so they are full of energy. They need room to roam and things to keep them occupied.

Missed this part. WTF kind of mutt is this? That's an odd combo. Aussie collie pit bull mastiff.

Neither sounds like a good family dog to me. I would worry more about the AU shepherd part than the pit. AUS are bat shite crazy. I've only met a few but they all were.

Largely depends upon the owner.

Exercise, stimulation, socialization and structure. As an owner, if you can do this routinely and effectively, many of the issues that you read about or see on TV today would not exist in many of the "bully" breeds.

that 1/4 of Pitt wont be a factor in that dogs temperament. I hate small dogs, I would go with the Sheppard/Mastiff mix.

I had a aussie Shepard mix and that fricker would nip at everything from kids to chickens and other dogs trying to herd them. I wouldn't want anything to do with a aussie/pit mix. That thing needs to be put down.

Not this one. Will chase cars and nip at everything. Combine that with the pit bulls natural human-killing instinct and it's a bad mix.

Will only kill you 1/4 of the way.

It def is an odd combo of breeds. The momma is black in color is half aussie/ border collie with a bit of lab in it....the dad is brown and half pit and half mastiff. I don't care for small dogs either but wife wants small. Have a little girl been wanting a puppy. There's pros and cons I guess. I hate Chihuahuas.

Ive had dogs my whole life and the only one that had ever bit anyone was the Australian Shepard. Now granted it happened when I was a kid and my friend was running towards me out of no where so he was defending me. I guess it boils down to do you want a big dog or small dog. Either would be good I personally like mutts over pure breeds. They seem to be better dogs to me

Why not go to one of the pet adoption days with your family and see how the dogs interact with your daughter?

The big dog probably needs a lot of attention and exercise for starters. I think the cocker mix would be a better family dog
