Yes because the average weight of a good ole baw and his lady has tripled in the last few years.

There has always been, at least in the marketing department. Its how the big 3 have always fought in the truck market.

Funny thing is, those numbers are usually based on the base models abilities with all the towing packages. Start adding options and the heavier diesel engine and you sill soon find out that your 3/4 is severely de-rated in the towing dept.

A F250 Gas 2wd xl supercab will have a higher cargo / tongue rate and therefore higher towing numbers than a Platinum Diesel 4x4 crew cab. Same with 1/2 to 1 ton models from everyone.

Everything in the 3/4 ton market seems to now center around being able to tow a gajillion pounds and have close to 1000ft-lbs of torque. Even the 1/2 tons are sorta in on this action. Anecdotally where I live I rarely see anyone towing anything that seems to approach those large trailer numbers. Is it a real need or more of a marketing competition?

Good news for businesses that buy these things used I guess.

The new Silverado 3500HD tows a ridiculous 36,500 lbs. The next new Ram will tow 36,700 lbs. Eventually, Ford will build one that tows 36,900 lbs.

And so on.

And so on.

And so on.

Just let people buy what they want to buy. Who fricking cares? If I want an Audi, and have the money, I’ll buy an Audi, if not I’ll settle with Honda. If whoever is driving the 1tons have nothing to tow, so what.

That being said, a well made, 4 season travel trailer will be so close to the limits of a half ton, you and your family will be better off with a 3/4 or 1 ton.

But really, who gives a shite what people buy? Besides jealousy.

If you want a 6.5 or 8ft bed and 4x4 and don’t want the ultra high country platinum horn package you can get a better deal on a 2500 than a 1500 it seems like.

I bought a motor home a few years ago for tailgating. Try finding a spot at any decent campground. Everything is booked up solid.

This was true for me. I got a 3/4 ton XLT for the price of a F150 Lariat . There is no comparison mechanically between the two. It handles my tractor a lot better and the tail is not wagging the dog like it would in a half ton.
