Watched Aaron Watson and Jon Wolfe back in 2016. I still kick myself knowing I was at LSU when the Turnpike Troubadours were at The Varsity, but I wasn’t aware of TT at that moment in time.

It was a somewhat run-down second run movie theatre that played a lot of cool concert movies, etc., when I was a student.

Fun fact: the old retro dj was a not-so-long-ago fired LSU professor (couple years back) for spouting some loony liberal political views online and some violent rhetoric to boot. DJ Grand Marquis used to have the hoes lined up to get in there for some 867-5309.

That area was still a lot of fun in the late 90's and had a great mix of bars that catered to different crowds. We had the bars along Chimes street, The Varsity, Murphy's, Chelsea's, the big Carlotta Street parties on Halloween.

I think it was 90ish to mid/late 90's. Up and coming national acts, biggish names playing there before or after a UNO tour stop.

I'm not a 311 fan but saw them in 92 or 93 there. It was probably best show I have seen there. Opening act through 311. Place was packed. Looked like a punk/alt rock music video.

Spent many a night there in mid to late nineties. 311 was an absolute awesome show there. I think I saw Korn there too. Can't remember them all.

When it turned into the late, lamented "Varsity Take Two" at the end of the '80s, it was ahead its time.

It was awesome when I was a student there in the mid to late 90's. Saw the Toadies there in maybe 96 or 97 as a student and remember that being awesome. Lots of BTE and Cowboy Mouth shows there too in that time frame and the early 2000's. Great times.

Pretty much. Gotta book shows to be a venue.

Booking shows is only one part of the equation, needs an investor and someone with entertainment venue experience. BR is a small yet competitive market.

peak of creativity was certainly from the re-opening in the early 90's to 2000 ... it used to be on the mug, but the 90's talent coming through was ridiculous -- free shows with DMB and 311, Tori Amos, Public Enemy (No doubt opened), White Zombie, Danzig, Widespread, Pavement, Blues Traveler (who also played at Fred's around that time), L7, The Breeders, The Jayhawks, Rev. Horton Heat, Jon Spencer, Lucinda Williams, Marilyn Manson, Wilco, Ice T, Maceo Parker to name a few. I want to say Tribe Called Quest played as well. And of course a great spot for local and regional talent and parties.

Once Glenn Prejean left, mediocrity and a casino like approach set in. Also, the area and tastes shifted. Still a great venue with sight lines and sound. The right talent agent could make it easily competitive with other venues in town.
