Has education made us dumber as a society?

Look at the complete idiocy that comes out of universities, look at the adult children that have no grasp on how the real world works and how to present themselves to it. Look at the way we vote, the music we put out, the movies we put out, etc.
The education system nowadays does not teach children how to think and instead teaches them what to think. It seems we’re teaching kids to be great parrots but not much else.
We insist that every student go to college, we shite on the trade schools. We don’t point kids to that direction in high school, or after. And the worst part about it is a lot of high schools have tech type of programs that would have kids earning real cash straight out of high school. We teach kids that working a job like plumbing, or welding, or electricians are beneath them when they are very respectable career paths and one in which you can make great money in and not have the debt incurred from a college that some students simply aren’t cut out for.
We seem to be moving away from acknowledging excellence in the classroom for fear it’s not inclusive. Well what kind of message does that send to the students?
I believe that the federal department of education has ruined the education of our children and you can use the litmus test of average reading level, marks on tests, etc. from before it was implemented and after to come to that conclusion.
I know my question in the subject line is a bit juxtaposed; but I believe it’s a fair question.

It's been going on for a long time. Our "education" system is based on the Prussian Model of Education.
It isn't about education. It's about creating unthinking drones for The State and a worker bee mentality for industry.

Liberal arts education and insisting every single fricking idiot needs a college degree rather than a trade, yes.

Well I still think part of the problem aside from education is that people can’t think and discern shite for themselves.

What's happened is academics have replace priests as the exalted class. They establish their missions -- you call them universities -- in pagan territory to proselytize their message among the unsaved-- er, I mean unwoke.

It depends on the person imo
I have always been fascinated with many things since childhood like history, geography, geology, astronomy, etc. and studied them on my own. So I really didn’t learn anything in college on these issues.
I have an engineering degree and I think most of what helped me was being forced to do math constantly to prepare me for the real world. But again the professors largely were not helpful and I learned most of what I did on my own and was able to understand the principles of why an equation exists rather than blindly using an equation. If you can get to that point most things are infinitely easier
At least 90% of my knowledge of what I made a career of doing came from work experience.
Education would be more important in the medical field, and it’s more important for people who have difficulty grasping things on their own, but then that raises the question of whether they should be there in the first place.
Tricky question with a lot of variables

Not everyone can learn a trade, either.
The biggest problem is that we treat higher education as an entry system to mid to high level employment, rather than a thing in and of itself. There are plenty of mentally rigorous jobs that could be easily done without any kind of collegiate education - they would just require some kind of screening and a few years worth of on-the-job training. Unfortunately, that is illegal due to disparate impact.

Well the problem is the institutions of education in our country from pre-k all the way to to post-graduate level have been hijacked and turned into progressive indoctrination camps. This is obvious in two ways:
1. Young people nowadays emerge from school fully brainwashed in leftist ideology
2. Young people nowadays emerge from school lacking even basic real-world skills or knowledge.
ETA: downvote my post all you want. But what you can’t do is refute it.

Only the Liberalism behind public education

You mean education system? It definitely limits excellence.
Education isn't a bad thing, indoctrination is.
