A street where anything goes (except peeing and glass bottles) known for its bars and strip clubs….yeah….always trashy. But in a good way.
The problem is now, it seems like the trashy people attracted to bourbon are trashier than they used to.

What changed?
People's acceptance of "trashy."
Used to be a part of life, now people pretend to get all incensed.

People. People get older and their idea of fun changes. Their tolerance for a sketchy environment changes and its always been a sketchy environment.
NO hasnt changed much since the 1700s. The young folks in the Quarter are doing the same thing young people were doing 10, 20, 50, 100 years ago.

It used to be all strip joints and drug dealers.

back when I was at LSU the thugs in the FQ at least had a little compassion, a frat bro and his gf were mugged walking around the quarter after our formal one year, when the punk was going to take his wallet my bro said do you have to have the entire wallet? just take the cash, and that's all I had to get my back to Baton Rouge tomorrow, the tPOS gave him his wallet nd five bucks back

Correct, that it used to be safer. There was always a visible police presence back in the day. Big, tough cops that you didn’t want to piss off. Now, it is hard to find a uniformed NOPD officer in the FQ. And if you find one, it is likely to be a 5’ lady.

Back in the day it was understood that the NOPD would let some shite go, but if you did things in the Quarter, your head would get cracked.
Those days are gone.

Why are you laughing? I worked in the French quarter in college in the late 90s/early 2000s - i walked from canal st to work on Toulouse and then walked back to canal to take the bus home around 2:00 AM
If I would’ve taken the esplanade bus or even the orleans (which was picked up by the saenger) it might be a different story - 20 something years ago the crime wasn’t as random

Part of it is the homeless population. It wasn’t in style to be homeless in the ‘80’s like it is now so there were no homeless in the Quarter and like someone else mentioned the criminals tended to stay out of that area.

My BIL got really fricked up and went down the wrong street. Got surrounded and relieved of his cash and they all tried on his Ostrich skin boots, didnt fit so they gave them back. Took his smokes and lighter but left him with two cigarettes and a pack of matches.

Ole Earl Long did not court Ms. Starr there because it was classy, so yes it's been trashy since the 40s at least.

Yep, it was a haven for normal people who wanted to experience trashiness, like Las Vegas.
Crime has encroached on many urban areas to the point there is more crime and less police response today.
But its always been trashy.

The definition of trashy changes after you get out of your 20's. What's good trashy in your 20's becomes disgusting trashy in your 30's and up.
