Karaoke is easy. I'd be scared shirtless if I had to do standup.

Leaving the shirtless autocorrect.

I tried a few open mics in Little Rock but it was nerve racking. Anyone else?
Done it impromptu when technical difficulties delayed a band.

About ten minutes of stream of consciousness shite, impressions, and requests from the audience.

The minutes were like hours to me and probably like weeks or months to the victims.

Three weeks ago I caught some aspiring comics in a Liverpool venue, Jaysus they were painful to watch and listen to.

When I saw Ellen do it in a club I worked at I thought to myself, no way I'd do that.
Seems she knew much more than me at a younger age. Good for her.

Win 3rd place years ago on an open mic. Audience was pissed thinking I should've won.... judges said my bit was a little too "blue".

Would never want to make it a career though... having a temper it would end up being a roast of the city 1/2 the time like Bill Burr nuking Philly

Once.

The 'regulars' said I did well and should do it again, but I picked a night that had a bad crowd. It was a bunch of large groups of co-workers that were all talking to each other all night instead of paying attention to who was on stage.
That's what happens when you charge a very low cover on open mic night.

Very unnerving. Couldn't convince myself to muster up that much courage again. Glad I did it, though. Quite an experience.

This is one of the ballsy-est things I've ever read on the OT.

Did you have any material or were you just winging it?

I did in the early 90's... I had enough material for a 30 minute set... Got a spot in the Big Easy Laugh Off and did stand up with Ken Jung....

It's a very tough gig... You have to know your audience, much easier playing music...

I had shows where I killed, and did shows where I bombed.... Much nicer killing it...

I feel like after 3-4 beers I could entertain a crowd.

you've got to be a talented and thick skinned mofo to do standup, and as an audience member you've got to be the biggest dumbass in the world to heckle a skilled standup , they will absolutely cut you to pieces

I did for several months. It was fun but I just got busy with other aspects of life.

Definitely a rush
