I have never been, but I know at one time it was a decent place to go, but now it is a shell of what it use to be.

Is there a lot of crime there?

Took a bus in from nyc twice. The bus ride there isn’t bad (direct to casinos), but the bus terminal on the way back is a depressing site. Not dangerous, just sad.

Been to the Trump Taj......at the time there were too many casinos there for the market even though its on the east coast and close to NYC. They were all struggling to make it.....Atlantic City is basically a dump and you go a couple of blocks off the strip and it looks like a war zone. Maybe its gotten better since then.....it was also winter time so it was pretty bleak.

I would have thought this would bring enough business to the area to make it a "small Las Vegas".

Went up there for my brother's wedding in late 80s. Tyson was fighting Spinks that weekend iirc. Aside from that hoopla, it was a steady stream of tour busses dropping off and picking up elderly people all day long. Very depressing.

This was some time ago but it didn't really have anything approaching the scope of Vegas as far as entertainment other than gambling. There were only a couple of big casinos there. Trump had two of them and despite what business genius in chief may say, they were struggling. I'm sure its improved since then but it wasn't anything like Vegas. Atlantic City, what I saw of it, seemed like a dump but again it was their offseason in terms of it being still winter. It might be popping there in the summer. I wouldn't say AC is dangerous more just depressing but I think Vegas is kind of depressing too.....

As I say, it has probably gotten better but at the time the casinos were more downmarket and there wasn't anything else there. its probably a lot better now and would probably be fun in summer when you can get out on the boardwalk etc.

Won $40 at the Trump, but this was my overall opinion as well. Grand Isle looked better.

For anyone who is going to jump in and defend him, forget him being president for a moment, this isn't a political opinion or statement..

There is a series on Netflix called "Dirty Money" and one of the shows in the series is why I started this thread. It talked about Trump, but there was a specific part about Atlantic City.. Evidently he and some other guys were going to be primary investors in the Taj Mahal, but evidently the other guys were killed in a plane crash or something.. But he had to eventually file for bankruptcy. And this was the part that made me curious about the state of Atlantic City today.

Evidently, when he filed for bankruptcy, he left a lot of contractors high and dry, but it did open under him right? They mentioned that the investors who bought it after it went bankrupt, didn't put much money at all into keeping it up. It became.. I guess. run down..

With that said, I was just curious if the locals keep the casinos open in AC or do people travel there specifically to go to the hotels and gamble.

I haven't been in a few years to go out there, but I was there last year to handle a couple of claims and the area off the boardwalk is very depressed.

That said, it is poised for a comeback, one of the casino/hotels was just purchased and you can pick up real estate cheap.

We may drive down in couple weeks f weeks to look at some real estate before the prices start to go up. It's the last place on the Jersey Shore to make a comeback, Asbury Park was the last, still going on and real estate has doubled in the past two years.

I think Trump's casino forays were one of his few business failures. Too lazy to look it up but believe he had to restructure via a BK. He and other developers overbuilt and I think Trump, in typical Trump fashion, wanted to build the glitziest casino ever but the money was made on downmarket gamblers, mainly retirees coming in from Philly and NYC to throw money at slots etc. The money was made on the mass market not exclusive high rollers...and Trump paid up for big attractions like boxing to draw to his casino,,,,,and yeah a lot people of got hung by Trump when he ran them through bankruptcy.....but he really had no choice...Trump misjudged the market, over-levered, and too make matters worse it was the early 1990's and the country was in a nasty recession. I think Trump licenses his name to a lot of his properties and doesn't put much equity in a lot of his deals and the casinos like that......

A comeback from hurricane Sandy or from a down economy?
