I've done the structural work on several for an architect I work with. Most were red iron like you said, but I've done some timber and one with SIPS (structural insulated panels).
I think they're pretty sweet... that timber one looks amazing.

Ok, I see no spray foam insulation in AUCE05's pic, so how in the world would you keep that thing cool in the summer and warm in the winter?
Looks really cool but is it practical?
Insulation is on top.

Not going to minimize cost by trying to cool that in the summer time
Fake news. The metal building is insulated with the bubble wrap radiant barrier and then the house itself will be insulated as well. Open up the roll up shop doors during the Summer and a shop house is probably more energy efficient than a brick and mortar house with cellulose. Source: My brother has a shop house and his energy bill is nothing.

I would love to build a big shop with living quarters for a bachelor pad/camp. One bedroom upstairs with a big open living room/kitchen downstairs. Very similar to the pic you posted. One can dream...

Does anyone have any experience with contractors in the baton rouge or surrounding area? I would like to start building by august.
It was all good until this part. You may not have noticed but we had a bit of a flood a few months back. Contractors are basically anally raping people while grilling their first borns right now to do a job. I was just breaking ground on a full renovation when the rains started and my guy wanted a 30% premium once the market went nuts. I am sitting it out at the present. In my experience, you would be wise to wait on this project for a year.

I knew a guy who built a beautiful barn home but he's dead now so I guess he won't be any help.

Not true. I hAve an 1800sqft and my highest bill was $190.00 with a wife going through menopause. You can almost hang meat in this house.
To the op, if you want high open ceilings then you will have to go with red iron. Wood pole barn type construction require ceiling rafters.
My only regret was not doing spray foam insulation. I have two layers of R19 fiberglass in my walls but spray foam would have been more airtight. I have 21 foot ceilings in my living room.
Wife and I did all the interior construction so PM me if you have any questions.

Town and Country Builders
John Smith, Brandon, MS 1-601-918-6083
He builds them and is very good and reasonable. Wood or metal. His kids play soccer here in BR a good bit and he builds all over the area. He built my pole barn and barn. Pictures are June 3 on his page. Great guy and great builder and is starting another for me in a couple of months. Is doing a friends in Crosby, MS shortly as well.

Little late, but I was on a ski trip. Here are a few photos of where my parents live now, they bought land literally across the street and are building another one now
My parents have built them, themselves along with several other houses. They have contracted out all of the work. It's a hobby of theirs.

Anyone know of any good architects that they would recommend in Louisiana to design a large garage/bonus living area second floor with a small addition to tie it into my house? I'm open for all kinds of construction as long as it goes along with the current style, but I'm looking for someone that can really add some design that makes sense. TIA.
