Has anyone here flown on an ATR42 turbo-prop plane?

I’m not the most experienced at flying and have only flown on smaller jets for 2-3 hour flights. How was the flight? Decent size plane?

When I worked for TIG. I use to fly on these all the time from Puerto Rico to St. Croix. They wasn't bad for short flights.

Kinda noisy and small from what I remember.

Yes they are noisy as hell. Have some noise cancelling head phones on if possible.

Not a bad ride for short hops. Known for their problems in icing conditions.

I’ve flown on them in Africa. It’s noisy, but just fine.

Correct, they found out that ice was able to build up beyond the deicing boots on the aileron's.

Not scary for kids at all. Try to sit toward the front of the aircraft, so it’s quieter.

doesn't help when you are in a holding pattern, in icing conditions, with flaps extended either, not what boots are designed for

Additionally they are slow. An airplane mechanic friend said the ATR is called an air slug.
If it matters to you, the ATR boards from the rear so the front seats are the last to deplane.

Was that the kind that crashed outside of buffalo or was it a DH8C?

Define "decent". It's big enough to hold quite a few people, but the specifics depend on how the carrier has configured it of course.
And the amount of room for each person also depends on the carrier.

Every now and then, Continental used to use Bombardier turboprops between IAH and BTR. They're a lot louder and not as smooth. They also used to fly at a lot lower altitude. Not sure why.

I remember flying one from FLL to FPO once..was carrying on a conversation with the person across the aisle and having to almost scream..once the engines really got going I couldn’t hear a thing.

If it is the newer generation -600 model like Silver just bought (flies them from Florida to the Keys and Bahamas) then it is a nice plane. A little cramped, similar to a 50-seat regional jet that most major airlines operate.
The -600 models employ a noise suppression system to counteract the vibrations from the propellers. It works really well. I flew on the larger 72-600 in New Zealand and sitting next to the wing the only way you'd have known you weren't on a jet was by watching the prop.
Great aircraft, but it isn't going to be like flying on a widebody 777 or A330.

The Colgan Air flight was actually a DH8D (in ICAO parlance). That would be the Dash-8-Q400, similar to what used to operate into BTR.
Cause of that crash was pilot error. Like really bad, flight school case study-type pilot error.
