It’s how I became an OT Bawller at the young age of 35.

I'm no scientist but how could the center of the earth, which is just short of 25k miles in circumference, be only 4k miles to the center? Wouldn't the center be 12k miles or so deep?
JFC, did you make it to 5th grade?

I did when I was eight or nine, but struck limestone and fossilized coral about 3 feet down and quit.

Sure did. It was in Florida though so education was sketchy

I tried digging to China when I was a kid. Got about 2 feet down before I called it a day
I did the same thing as a kid after watching a cartoon. I got down to maybe 4 feet… or least I had to jump to get out.
I remember my grandfather coming out there. In the backyard and saying
“ I know you grandma wants me gone, but I ain’t dead yet… stop that digging my yard up boy”
I was maybe 6 years old.

Yep. They sealed it shut. Conspiracy theory is you could hear the wailing of souls in hell.
I don't know how quickly this happens. I guess its different everywhere, but wouldn't this hole close on its on with the tectonic plates moving?

The hole? Mostly. They sealed the opening.

Over 12k meters deep and thats not even halfway through the crust.
I think their drill bits started melting and thats why they couldnt go deeper
The reason they stopped was due to the rock becoming a plastic liquefied texture from the heat and it kept getting stuck up In the drill bit.
I think it was Swedan that tried the same thing and went further distance wise but not as deep because the drill began angling more horizontal than vertical.

According to the BBC, locals say the hole, located near the Kola Peninsula in northwestern Russia near the border with northern Norway, is that deep they can hear the screams of souls tortured in hell.
quote:
Yet the hole itself is barely as wide as a dinner plate.
It took almost 20 years to drill that deep but the hole is only around one third of the way through the Earth's crust with temperatures already reaching 180 degrees Celsius (356 Fahrenheit).
It has since been sealed off.

That's as Russian of a pic you'll ever see.

Art Bell had an entire show about it

I tried it once.
After a couple of hours, I had to go ask Mom for some koolaid.
The project sort of died after that.

I just tried this and my hose didn't water bore under the ground at all. Not sure how you did it far enough to get the hose stuck and your dad pissed.

The dwarves did.
Unexpected findings occurred.

The earth’s center is about 4,000 miles down.
Only about 3,993 miles to go. Easy peasy

When you get the the middle you'll be digging up instead of down

There have been wells drilled to Jurassic levels (~30,000 ft) in and around Mobile Bay that have reached 400 deg F. As said before some onshore wells get to that heat level as well. Geothermal wells also get into the range, some even higher. Drilling to those depths and temps already creates problems, but logging (ie recording what type of rock you are in) is even more challenged.

Coastal Florida. Sandy soil.

tectonic plates moving aint got crap to do with boreholes closing in on themselves. The sheer weight of the sediment above and around a well and principal stresses of the rock and fluid at that depth are what causes boreholes like this to collapse

Yeah, when I was a kid.
Got down about 6 inches and hit a rock.
Game over.
