Lifelong friend of my dad’s was a bookie in Baton Rouge. Had his house raided by the FBI who found almost $100k in the ice cream tub in his freezer. Stereotypical Italian last name although I have no idea if that has any bearing on anything.

Fast forward 20 or so years and my mom wants to take me and a friend to a Duke-UNC basketball game. This friend of my dad arranged for tickets and says the guy will meet you in the lobby of your hotel. My mom goes to meet the guy and tries to make small talk and thank him and he just cuts her off and says he owes my dad’s friend a favor and this is the repayment and he really doesn’t want to make the small talk.

That’s the closest I got.

When I was a field rep I called on a recycling place in B'ham that according the machine sales rep on the account, was owned by an Italian "made man" from New York. He came down here and I got to meet him over dinner. Another time I saw him blow up at his plant manager. I have no idea if he really was a real mobster. But I will say if he ever decided to go into acting, he'd be immediately type-cast as a mobster. He looked talked, walked, and acted like the ones you see on TV.

Sort of. My uncle was pretty wealthy, kept his money in the form of gold krugerrands. Owned a few restaurants in Detroit. I was never formally told but he made most of his money from being a bookie.

I lived with him after Katrina, and he would occasionally have me drive him around to “run errands”. I remember he asked to stop at several banks one day, would get stacks of stuff out of safety deposit boxes. Would casually hand me a stack of cash to give to random people throughout the day. Everyone we came across was extremely nice to him and I.

It wasn’t until years after he passed I learned about it all. Miss that SOB everyday. He pissed the weekend of my 21st birthday.

One of my buddy’s sister (no pics) dated a guy who had strong connections to the mob in New Orleans. He wasnt Italian so he wasnt “made” but was highly respected.

He was a cool guy to hang out with but you certainly didn’t want to frick with him.

Was in Napoli in 1985 when Red Brigade whacked the Mayor. Polizzi and Carbenerria locked the city down. Dudes with Uzzis on every corner. Best days of my Navy career.

Buddy of mine and I used to say drink and play Golden Tee on days off around 1998. Local pool hall went on a Monday or Wednesday. These old dudes who spoke some Italian were in there half the time. Playing poker. Actual game. Real cash etc. in a Texas bar so not legal. Place just gave them free run.

Anytime my buddy and I got drunk enough to smile and nod or actually say “hello” we were met with glares.

Lafayette has always had what is called the Lebanese Mafia, the Asheys, Reggies, Abdallas, all were large families & all were / are very much connected. Note that Senator Kennedy, of the Boston Kennedys, married one of Judge Reggie's daughters & EWE & Judge Reggie were well known "business associates". MANY races at Evangeline Downs, when it was in Lafayette & managed by the older Ashey, had races fixed like clockwork. My buddy would drive in at least once a mth to bet on a specific horse. Said horse's name being given to him by a "friend" in New Jersey.

Not directly, I grew up with a kid that I'm pretty sure was a WPP family. His family was from Colombia and their stories always changed. They also wouldn't step foot in the state of Florida. My grandma is Italian and grew up in Jefferson Parish. She knew and grew up with some kids whose parents may gave been involved with the mob but nobody ever talked about it.

Dewayne Marcello, Carlos’s little brother, used to chase us off his front lawn when he lived next door to one of my best friends in elementary school.

Around 2012, I was walking through the Italian section of NYC (don't remember how I knew it was the italian section) and these three very stereotyped "mafia" looking guys in long coats and hats came walking by. One of them said in a low but very hearable voice, "We have to do something about that guy." The second guy just nodded, and the monster of a man walking behind them stared straight ahead. After I analyzed they weren't talking about me I stopped and looked around for cameras, cause it was so much what you see on tv I thought I had walked into a film shoot.

If you've been around any high-ranking union guys, you've been around guys who at least know mobsters.
Also, I worked on a pipeline job with a long-haired, bearded, 6'5", 350 pounder who claimed to be related to Carlos Marcello. He also referred to him as "Uncle Carlos".
