Has anyone ever been forced to wash dishes for not being able to pay for a meal?

At dinner and digging around in my coat to find my wallet. Thought I had forgotten in and immediately thought I’d be washing dishes.

Was that ever really a thing? Or just a rumor that floated around to scare you into always having money?

What do restaurants do these days if you can’t pay for your meal? Surprised they haven’t invented a system where you swipe your card before you eat (well…at restaurants at least)

Your mom usually cooks and cleans for me. It's quite a nice deal

I don’t think that was ever something that realistically occurred. What would the dishwasher be doing wile you washed dishes? Either way, they’re paying a dishwasher.

I wouldn’t be shocked if it used to happen before Venmo and ATMs on every corner. You don’t have to pay the dishwasher as much if he gets off an hour early.

No, we would make them leave something of value like a watch to ensure they came back with the money. I’ve heard of restaurants making the person leave their children there until they showed up with the money, but those were usually places owned by Greeks or Turks.

Nah. I'd just blow the manager and get out of there.

You’ve watched Pee Wee’s Big Adventure one too many times.

There's a prolific film series about moderately attractive girls who get caught shoplifting in pawn shops.

Girls who can't pay their restaurant tabs should be next.

Almost thought I was there one time.

I came back to Louisiana to visit and me and a friend went to lunch, he forgot his wallet. My card got declined for suspicious activity. I had enough cash to pay and a 15 cent tip. Felt so bad I drove back from our hotel to Mandeville and gave them the tip after I straightened my card out.

Have the customer leave their ID until they return with the money.

I usually just call my friend, Damone, and ask him to bring me my wallet. Meantime, I get refills on Coke for me and my date.

When I interviewed for my internship, the hiring manager took me out to lunch after we were done with the interview. Check comes and the baw forgot his wallet. I wasn’t too bad off then but still a poor college kid, but I whipped out the ole BoA cash rewards card and paid for that sucker. Ended up getting the job and reimbursed.

No but when I was dating my wife I lost my wallet and had a restaurant call the cops on me. We were in the parking lot digging through my car looking for the wallet when they arrived. Cops didn't do squat and we came back later and paid and never went there again. We would go there 1-2 times a week and were not looking to skip on a check.

No, because then you have some jackass washing dishes that’s slow as molasses. All a manager wants at that time is to go home. Hurry!

Any broke arse that couldn’t pay his bill would be terribly slow. No thanks.

We did it a number of times purposely back in high school instead of asking our parents for cash. We’d let the owner/manager know ahead of time though to make sure they were cool with it.

No, I don’t live in a black-and-white 1930s comedy.
