I had a friend who lived in China for a year. The construction there is so shoddy, that when people move there, they build them a new house. When they move out, the house is torn down and another is built in its place. They don't expect the house to last more than a year or so.

Not saying that's what happened here, but I'd take any Chinese claims of their construction practices with a grain of salt.

Who would stay in a 30 story building that was built in two weeks?

I wouldn't even stay in a residential house that was built in two weeks.

No sane person would disagree with the idea that unions and government regulations can really slow down construction projects. But in all of that mess are some pretty essential things, like inspections to make sure the building is properly assembled, that it's not going to fall apart. I don't know how you could possibly perform the necessary inspections and corrections for a building of that size in two weeks. And there will, without a doubt, be mistakes because even the best workers make some mistakes.

Well if getting it done in 30 days means the death of multiple people, is that worth it? What's the benefit of building something that quickly?

Who would even enter a 100+ story building built in 13 months in 1930? Ever been in the Empire State Building?

but wouldn't you also agree that the US could adopt this method domestically and lower construction costs for ordinary/nondescript buildings?

What and look like the bland mess the USSR slapped together during the Cold War? No, that's dumb. How about people start taking some pride in what they build instead of catering to the ignorant masses too preoccupied with their smart phone screens to look around every once in a while?

Yeah a building built by men who cared about what they wrought vs the Chinese who have atrocious safety standards and a history of building things that capture the headlines for the moronic masses, only to have those same structures abandoned in a few short months or years. Collapsing buildings is not uncommon in China, they are a culture that lives on cutting corners on most aspects of modern life.

You missed my point, but I’ll play: How many Chinese were involved in the Hard Rock Cafe hotel failure in Nola?

I’d wait a year at least to sleep in it though. So year and 2 weeks.

Dont worry, chances are no one will ever stay there. They build thousands of high rise buildings that end up NEVER being used.

What does that have to do with the fact that a far higher percentage of such projects in China are done to lesser or nonexistent standards than you seem willing to accept? Unlike in China, the Nola building collapse will have inspections and labratory analysis to figure out what went wrong versus the contractor simply walking away or sliding money to local bureaucrats to bury any liability.

Allow me to clarify the point I tried to originally make before another Roseanne Rosana Danna goes off on me about the fricking Chinese: Isn’t it pretty amazing that the Empire State Building was built in 13 months in 1930, and still stands today; so just because something is done quickly it doesn’t mean it will fail. And by the way, not all the buildings in China have collapsed, not that I give a shite.

500 room hotel in 202 days back in 1968

In San Antonio, H.B. Zachry built a 500 room hotel for the worlds fair in 202 days back in 1968... they claim to have been the first to revolutionize modular construction. Its no 2 weeks but considering it was the first of its time, I'd say thats pretty good.

A couple years after that, I had a summer job with the company that built those rooms (Construction Modules, Inc). That summer we did a couple hundred rooms for a Holiday Inn going up in Orlando, FL, then started on hospital rooms (I can't remember where the hospital was)

It seemed to me like a pretty valid way to put up that type of building, but I've got no idea at all on the economics of it. I suspect it worked well at the time because we were non-union and paid pennies. I deserved pennies -- I was an inexperienced summer job kid, but even the good workers got shite.
