I didn't see a thread, but today is 2019's version of every 4th yearmedical student finding out where they will spend their first 1-7 years as a doctor.

Congratulations to everyone who matched this year, and I hope you have all gotten your top choice or two.

Feel free to share where you'll be.

You don't practice if you don't find a program to accept you outside of the match (rare).
There are a few (mostly Missouri I believe) "apprenticeships" where unmatched med school graduates can practice heavily supervised.

But if those two criteria aren't met, you're not eligible for a US license until you find a program, and programs essentially only use the Match to fill spots.

There are unfilled spots in various residencies (usually less competitive specialties) and you can try to SOAP into one of those during like Monday -thursday of match week.

It was previously called a Scramble (which seems appropriate) but someone stated that that was offensive so now it is called the SOAP.

Also, some people just do an internship (meaning just the first year of residency) while they figure out what to do in the next cycle.

Can you pay somebody and get your top choice regardless of merit?

Good questions.

You apply for interviews based off of your class rank and standardized test scores (USMLE Step 1 and 2). Then you have to be granted interviews at various institutions. Then you make a list of your favorites and the programs make a rank list of their favorites applicants (in the order they want them). Then a computer algorithm runs through every applicant in america and the results are revealed on match day.

Also matching into competitive things like Orthopedics or dermatology is very impressive no matter the locations. Noncompetitive specialties such as internal medicine are still difficult to get into at prestigious institutions or in desirable towns.

It's basically a super slow (about 5 month long) speed date. Except you only get one number. And you're required to date them for a couple of years.

Suicide or you try to match again next year.

ETA: All my friends got their first or second choices. I decided to skip the match this year and take a gap year so that I can spend some of my trust fund money on traveling and enjoying life before I get too old or have kids.
