My son wants to go to Med school for anesthesiology. How does that work because I know most of them work out of groups and kind of just go to different facilities when they are needed. Do you try to match with a certain group?

Match day is where you go for residency/additional training after med school. He would match with a program (Harvard/UAB/LSU-NO/Tulane/etc). The group is where you get a job after residency. The trend is toward employee deals with a hospital. Of course groups come with their own issues (buying in for partnership for x dollars after y years of service).

You go to medical school first.
When you're nearing the end, you apply to anesthesia residency programs (through the Match).
Once you've finished the 4-year program, you may sign with any group you'd like, or start your own.

One of my best friends matched exactly where he wanted with the specialty he wanted in Kansas City. Incredibly proud of him.

Step1. Get into medical school.
Step2. Survive medical school.
Step3. Apply for a residency in anesthesiology using the match.
Step4. Complete said residency and become board certified.
Step5. Join a group.

From what I see at work it seems like being an Anesthesiologist is still a good job at the moment, as long as you are comfortable overseeing several CRNAs at once. Now who knows what the future holds.
Anesthesia spots are NOT nearly as competitive in the match now a days as compared to what they previously supposedly were.
