Some roles can have issues come up outside standard hours. While not required to handle those issues immediately, some works may choose to do so for a variety of reasons. Taking away WFH days may make those workers reconsider their choice. It's not complicated to figure out.

They just need to reevaluate the whole thing and come up with a universal solution for WFH.
unless a company/government agency does not have offices for workers to come to you won't convince me of the savings of WFH. I know in the private sector some allowances are made for people working from home for utilities and internet etc...why do you think that wouldn't become the case for state workers WFH? that would negate the savings some of you are touting.
As someone who works in an office I would gladly take a cut in pay to do my job from home that would be equivalent to what i spend going in to work and time commuting etc.

FTFY
Too many cameras will introduce a lot of "why were you doing this inconsequential thing" and make for an anxious, shitty work environment.
Work on your hiring/firing process instead so you don't have to police everyone

That's stupid

I don't understand why y'all are so worried about where or how other people make their living.
I'd much rather pay a state worker to work from home and stop paying for office space than force them to the office to pay for both them and the office space.
Always the jealous MFers forced to work in an office hating on people that WFH. I personally dgaf where people work and even if in an office I’d rather less people be there anyway.

Sounds like they’re own fault then
Refusing to do the unpaid work that you’ve been doing all because you have to get in a car and go to an office sounds like a hissy fit. Should’ve never set that precedence.

You don't sound like you have a very important job.

I love comments like these posted smack dab in the middle of the work day. I'm sure you're on PTO right now though
if i was at home i would just run errands, watch tv, post on TD or mow the grass while "WFH" but when I am caught up at work I post on TD...great point box you got me

You realize you're arguing against yourself here, right?

Not for me, but I'm an adult who doesn't spend every waking hour on twitter.

I’m not unimportant but there’s a thing called boundaries, work life/balance, etc.

The only reason there's been such a hardline push for return to the office is because of commercial real estate.

Salaried people never had required office hours, simply be available, come in if and when required, and treat the place like a family you care about. Now it’s “have your arse in a seat, behind this locked door, for no reason, frick how it’s been forever without issue”.
My work is measured in metrics such as uptime, time to return service, meeting project deadlines etc. These will all get worse as the person needed to fix something they could’ve done at 7am, will now be stuck in their car at that time.

Your employer gave you a concession of flexibility, which swings both ways. If I have nothing to do at 1:30, I’ll go do my laundry, but if someone needs something at 6, I don’t mind taking 20 minutes to do it.
Now you want my arse in a seat where I have to sit there with my dick in my hand at 1:30 in a cube, that’s fine, but I’m not doing shite at 6 anymore

I feel bad for people who were WFH pre-COVID successfully and are now being micromanaged into oblivion because some higher-up is upset that he can't continue to justify his job unless he's a micromanaging a-hole.

So you don't deal with outside departments, companies, anything? Because there is no such thing as standard working hours that are universal. Your 8 hour day could miss several hours of my 8 hour day depending on several factors.
A good example of this was a time a PM for an outside company told me he didn't see an email sent at 4:12pm because he was out of the office at 4. In my industry, that is a hilariously bad explanation. But based on your logic, this should be ok, right? This guy was private sector btw
ETA And you will find few bigger supporters of work/life balance than me.

In our main office, while additional office space is actively being sought (including rental of private buildings), some people are having to double-up in cubicles. That’s not a positive work environment IMO. Plus that’s an added cost for an already strapped state budget.
It sounds like some cuts are in order.

I work under the Division.
All offices under the Division have either been in the office for 3 or 4 days. These offices haven’t been purely remote since the early days of COVID.
Most offices under elected officials have been back every day or at most given one day remote work.
The notion that state workers have been at home everyday for 5 years is false.

You think paying someone $79 a month for an internet reimbursement is the same cost as having office space for them
My last firm had about 50% capacity of office space for headcount, requiring asses in seats, and thus space for all those asses, would cost millions
