South African police have used rubber bullets to disperse a mob trashing H&M stores in and around Johannesburg, after the brand used a controversial picture of a black child. The protests were organised by the radical Economic Freedom Fighters' party (EFF). H&M apologised several days ago for the image, which ran on its website. It featured a young black boy modelling a green
hoodie with "coolest monkey in the jungle" written on it.

Video footage showed activists trashing displays, kicking over clothes rails and shoving mannequins. Floyd Shivambu, an MP from the EFF, tweeted: "That @hm nonsense of a clothing store is now facing consequences for its racism. All rational people should agree that the store should not be allowed to continue operating in South Africa." South African Police (SAPS) also tweeted about the vandalism, writing: "Several incidents of protests at H&M stores around the province have been reported. "At the East Rand Mall the protesters managed to enter the shop & stole several items. #SAPS members had to intervene and dispersed the group of protesters by firing rubber bullets." EFF leader Julius Malema defended the rampage, saying: "We make no apology about what the fighters did today." "We are not going to allow anyone to use the colour of our skin to humiliate us, to exclude us," he added.

You really have to wonder how out of touch the marketing department has to be to think this would not cause controversy.

The mother of the child had no issue with it

And how the following reaction doesn't exactly brush away negative stereotypes.

Soo....to protest an ad that is supposedly portraying a child like an animal (in a racist way) protestors are gonna act like animals themselves??

Using racial incidents as an excuse to steal? Nobody will take you seriously that way

Sounds like this city is a shithole.

It's time RSA just hand over the keys to the black population and let the inevitable implosion happen.

Of course it would, but it's gonna happen within the next 15 years. Might as well just rip the bandaid off now and get it over with. It'll be another shithole country on that God-forsaken continent.

That place has turned into a country of have and have nots regardless of color.
You have whites living in the same conditions as blacks in those shacks.
You also have white and blacks living in those castle communities with armed guards.

I have a family friend that has been going to RSA for years and she says it gets worse every time she goes. There's a radical BLM-like element that is becoming mainstream and will eventually influence a Mugabe-like regime.

Rubber bullets?
I see the issue.
Next time use real bullets.

I wonder what the outrage would be if it was a white kid advertising a shirt saying “The crunchiest cracker on the farm”

They rape and murder white farming families there but they are upset over a hoodie some kid got paid to wear.
